This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

How long have you been gaming?

Brander

33 years.  Started playing in basic D&D, currently running a Cthulhuesque Savage Worlds game and playing in games of Pathfinder and Dark Heresy.  Also making a character for an upcoming game of 13th Age.

Fell in love with Traveller, Gurps, Fudge, and Big Eyes Small Mouth along the way, but Savage Worlds is my current love and go-to system.

Also started wargaming at the same time as I started playing D&D, with Ogre and GEV, then played a lot of Battletech, and later 40K.  Currently not wargaming at all, but would love to play some Stargrunt and/or Dirtside sometime soon.

Coincidence? :)

There are two kinds of people in the world. Those who remember what year songs came out. And the rest of us.

Armchair Gamer

25 years, but sporadically. And by some criteria here, I've never done 'real gaming' (pre-Second Age TSR AD&D, sandbox/hexcrawl gaming). :)

  Systems I have played in that time: 2E AD&D (started off "1.66E" with a 1E PHB, 2E DMG and 2E MC), MERP/Rolemaster, a convention game of Shadowrun, d6 Star Wars, SAGA Rules System, D&D 3E, d20 Star Wars (original), D&D 3.5E, Star Wars SAGA Edition, D&D 4E, BECMI D&D, 5E D&D.

Not at all. I spotted a couple of RPGs in your list.

Natty Bodak

I started in 76 or 77 when I was about 8 when my oldest brother came home from college with a drafting tube full of secret maps. Later that year (or the next) he gave me the boxed set as a gift. I kept my characters on loose leaf folded lengthwise in a shoebox, along with my pencil.

Perhaps a little bit different than others from my generation, I started with RPGs first, and war gaming was added later.

Yes they do! Not to threadjack, but I wonder how many recognize what that's from. A great game! (Though the festering fumaroles may be the least interesting part of it.)

At least it was uphill, in the snow for at least one direction!

Neat to see someone else who started around that time and was so young (actually younger than I was). I had already done war gaming, and friends and I were making up RPGs before we got turned on to D&D.

Géza Echs

I'm thirty-nine now. I started gaming in about 1987, give or take a year or two.

My first game was either Bunnies & Burrows or Traveler. I can't remember which one was first, but I know I played both in fairly close succession. By 1990 I had played Dungeons & Dragons, Champions, Call of Cthulhu, and a handful of others that slip my memory at the moment.

I wouldn't say that I was big into role-playing at the time; it was more of a casual interest. When Vampire: The Masquerade came out, though, I got big into the hobby, and haven't really stopped since.
