This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: RPGPundit;1121419There's some people who hate me just because I'm successful and well-known in the hobby in spite of all their ill-wishes.

Jesus, man. You don't really believe that, do you? I know you desperately, desperately want to be a big-wig in the RPG world. To be a social media star. But c'mon. If I asked D&D players at my local store if they knew who the RPG Pundit is, how many would I have to ask before I found someone who had heard of you? 80? 100?

You're somewhat notorious among the small, small fraction of hobbyists who follow forum drama. That's it.

Your Youtube videos get maybe 1,000 hits. In today's booming hobby, that's fuck all. D&D unboxing videos get more views than that. There are dozens of more popular RPG content creators on Youtube alone. Even second-tier guys like Seth Skorkowsky have 50k+ subscribers. The quality of your videos - the picture, sound, editing - is strictly amateur hour. If you really want to make this your thing, to be a social media star, at least put an effort in. Get a decent camera. A good mic. Edit the content. Make some effort to organize your thoughts and be entertaining. There are dozens of Youtube channels and podcasts to use as examples. Because right now, your estimation of yourself far exceeds the quality and reach of your contributions to the hobby.

Quote from: RPGPundit;1120803The difference is I don't lie.

I don't actually care. Because this isn't about your integrity, it's about having evidence to back up your claims.

#TrustButVerify

Quote from: RPGPundit;1120803And I found an example in literally thirty seconds of googling.

Then you're going to have to provide the search string you used, because nothing I entered brought that up.

Quote from: RPGPundit;1120803Here's one explicitly demanding that SJW gamers of color be hired or else this charity is alt-right or something.

Explicit? They neither demand 'SJWs' be hired, nor claim a charity is 'alt-right' if they don't, let alone use those words at all. For those who rightfully wish to avoid Twitter:

Quote"Share some solutions"???!! It's not rocket science. Hire people of colour! That's the solution!

As for fostering positive energy and lifting people up - guess what, they do that too! If you followed them and paid attention you would know that.

So either you are lying, or so delusional you honestly believe that's what they said. Either way a search based on those terms would not have brought that up.

Quote from: RPGPundit;1120803And another.

Just in case, here's another. And another.
And another.
And another.
And another
And another
And another

Nice, but all but one of those is from the same thread, so you could have just shared that. Wouldn't have looked as epic though.

And not one of these is from 'WinterBigGay'. You know, the only person you mentioned by name in your vid. I wonder why that search didn't bring anything up.

And now I see other people asking for sources for your latest vids, both here and on #YouTube. I wonder if you'll treat them as graciously.

Quote from: RPGPundit;1121419There's some people who hate me for ideological reasons. There's some people who hate me just because I'm successful and well-known in the hobby in spite of all their ill-wishes. There's some people who hate me because I showed them up in a discussion once. There's people who just hate me because I'm an asshole (an asshole who's right and successful in the hobby).

Quote from: RPGPundit;1121743Yup, that's true too, for those who casually hate me.

Your entire brand depends on being hated, and like all #SJWs you can't seem to tell the difference between that and being criticized.

At least you don't ban folks for doing that, which is the only thing keeping this place from becoming a full on ideological echo chamber.

Quote from: Haffrung;1122045Jesus, man. You don't really believe that, do you?

Fake it till you make it?

I used to believe they didn't, but now I'm not so sure. At the very least not answering why they considered their work better than Tim Pool's was telling.

If you asked a non-forum going player at a local store who anyone other than maybe gary gygax was, they probably wouldn't have a clue.

My estimation of myself is that I'm living rent-free in the heads of hundreds of scumbags, and that I'm one of a very tiny group of people who make a living off RPGs.

Are you using "they" to refer to me? Is that supposed to be the royal we? Or do you think I'm one of the alphabet people?

In any case I never said my work is better than Tim Pool, I said that he keeps repeating himself over and over in his videos, while I don't in mine.

Most gamers don't even know who wrote their favorite games.

I was running L5R at a convention in the late 90s and John Wick dropped by to say hi (he was the con's guest of honor), and even though most of the table owned the L5R core book, they didn't know who John Wick was until he pointed out that he wrote the game we were playing. And I've regularly run into AD&D players who didn't know who Dave Arneson was or that there were co-creators involved in D&D.

I'm unsure exactly why, but RPG designers don't have the same style of fandom as authors.

Repetition is important though.

As the master of rhetoric, Aristotle, put it; "Tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them, then tell them what you told them."

It's the same reason oral histories involve repetitions; typically in threes; of the same ideas in order to make them stick in the audience's head.

Too many ideas at once without repetition to reinforce the core points will just lead to your audience tuning you out.

That's what the big YouTube personalities you're criticizing have learned to do; Tell what you'll tell them. Tell them. Tell them what you told them.

Because designing a game is not the same as writing a novel.

It's the same way that most people don't know who designed a computer game they like, and many people even don't know who was the producer (or sometimes director) of movies they liked, though they often will know the names of the actors.

Yes, that is very important at a certain level of learning.  At others, not so much. You watch Jordan Peterson's post-fame videos and he's often repeating the same points from one to the other. Watch videos of his university lectures pre-fame and he doesn't.

But in any case, that's not why the Youtube people who do that are doing it. They're doing it because they discovered that the Youtube Algorithm rewards videos of a certain length, so making a video that isn't long enough gets less views.
