OK, I have to share this with people who can appreciate it! :)

Yesterday turned out to be a great day:  took the wife and kids to the Shriner's Circus in the morning; dropped them off for nap and went to for a ride on my HD; stopped at my LFGS (Black & Read) and (cue angelic music and white light) there it is on the shelf behind the counter- a pristine, white spine and all, copy of the Dungeons & Dragons Rules Cyclopedia.

Now, about two years ago they had a copy there as well.  The copy wasn't in the greatest of condition and the price was a little stiff so I waffled and the next time I went into the store it was gone!

However, this copy is pristine:  the spine isn't even broken in yet!  The cover and spine are still white!  No marks or writing on any pages!

Now, there is a bit of tinging on the edges of the pages because of the paper, but the paper is still in good shape and quality.

The price: $60 USD.

I paid instantly and decided that the beating from the wife would be worth it every time I looked at the book on the shelf. ;)

When I got home and explained the situation, and my wife saw and heard my excitement (I'm very low-key and laid back) she wasn't upset at all.  In fact, she didn't even needle me about being a nerd this time! :D

The Good Assyrian

Sweet! Great find! Those things are getting hard to come by these days.

Yeah, when I told the clerk about having to tell my wife, he just said to show her the Ebay prices. :)

The prices on the RC are really weird. I got my copy last year (or the year before) for $13 at Half Price Books.

Prompted by this thread, I looked at eBay. You've got one priced at $10, another with a $14 sticker, and they will end soon. But the bulk are anywhere from $50 to $90 and have bids. (The $10 one, oddly, did not have a bid when I looked.)

I knew I was getting a helluva steal and bought my copy without a moment of consideration (and mine had some minor damage I had to patch up, and has clearly seen some use). But it's still weird to see such a broad range on that book.

In any event, I think the RC is worth it at any of those prices. :)

And while my phone is an important tool for my daily life, it is not a life-saving device that KEEPS MY HEART FROM EXPLODING. Fuck, Tony. Get your shit together, pal."

Congrats on the find. It's very difficult to run into that kind of a gem in a store for that reasonable of a price. I think the store I occasionally visit would probably charge $80-100 for that particular book.

A few of the eBay prices have been fairly reasonable lately. I saw a couple Buy-it-nows for $50 and the books were in decent to good condition.

Sounds like your wife was a good find as well.

Indeed. :)

I used to ride motorcycles years ago (rode for 13 years), but then I met my wife, got married, and had/have (last one is still cooking in the oven ;)) children, and out of the blue last year she tells me that I need to buy a Harley-Davidson.  I wrote it off as one of those passing ideas, but she pushed and finally took me to the dealership.  We bought a used 2005 Road King (Chopper Blue & Silver).

I never realized how much I missed riding until my wife gave it back to me out of the blue. :D

Man, not me.  No way I'd pay $50 or $60 or more for a RC.

Nevertheless, if someone values it at that and is pleased with their purchase then I have no complaint, and offer my congratulations, too.  :)
The problem is not that power corrupts, but that the corruptible are irresistibly drawn to the pursuit of power. Tu ne cede malis, sed contra audentior ito.

Thanks. :)

Believe me, for a penny-pincher like me it wasn't easy... but it is something that I've wanted for long time and I only see the prices going up for this item as they become harder to find.

beeber

grats on that deal!  that was something that couldn't be passed up (well, if you needed a copy, that is--i already have one and wouldn't need a 2nd copy)

Congratulations on acquiring the Cadillac of D&Ds. If you derive 10% of the enjoyment this tome of awesomeness has provided me with these last 20 years, you'll have a blast.

Could it be due to differing physical conditions? $60 for a near-mint, $13 for a battered copy?

Quote from: Drohem;532541Thanks. :)

I hear you, man. I've been through the same with WFRP 2e recently (still waiting for it to arrive, BTW. Air mail to Brazil takes forever).
