This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Holy crap! Other forums have darlings. . .

Quote from: C.W.RichesonI *know* I've given RPGs less than a 6.  Lots of them. :)

Every rater will have their own preferences, I think the goal is to end up with a broad consensus that at the very least can act as a first step for an interested person.  Besides, check all you guys out - you click and see who has given what ratings.  I bet you're not the only ones ;)

Thanks for taking the time to rate Saga :D

I've only rated games I love, so mine are all 8-10...I figure, "why piss on someone elses love".  There are only 2 games that I've ever owned that I would rate as low as a 2, and those would be Midnight at the Well of Souls and Universe...I know other people loved those games, so I figure my opinion that they suck doesn't hold much water.

Quote from: C.W.RichesonNo argument that the index, on the whole, reflects the preferences of RPG.net.

The only way to change that is to get folk from other sites to come rate items and check it out :)

So, for anyone reading with 5 minutes to share some opinions, take a look.

I just don't have the time, or honestly the inclination.

Its like SW Saga Edition for me. I'd like to check it out, but my next two days off are full up. Until I check it out, I can't have an informed opinion on it. Does it live up to its hype? Does it make up for the last two versions that weren't worth the money IMHO?

Ha. At one point, I was seriously considering getting myself banned by calling the fucker out. Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed. Interesting how bitter non-gamers are the same all over... there was a Kiero-like guy on RPG.HU - same posting style, a blog about game theory, and of course he didn't play any enjoyable game either. The fucker.

Dr Rotwang!

I wanna go on the record and state that when I fall in love with a game, I do my best to say that I like it for these reasons and that it's not a panacea and gimmie a smoothie.

I think that you do a pretty good job of honestly representing what you like about games without getting up in the face of dissenters and making lots of noise simply for the sake of doing so.

Which is an exceptionally good and well written review IMO, which I found very useful.

Quote from: RPGObjects_chuckI was asked by a big publisher to write a book on "action fantasy" for True 20, and I demurred, precisely because I came to the conclusion awhile ago that True 20 wasn't really a good fit for that genre.

I hope you never give up on D20 Modern chuck.

Someone (Psion maybe?) once compared you to one of those ice sculptor's who uses a chainsaw...a craftsman using unlikely tools and a difficult medium to produce something really good.

You've maanged it more than once (Blood and Space, Blood and Guts, Blood and Samurai's (ok it's not called that))...I think you did the right thing leaving rue20 to whoever.

Quote from: MelanDrew's got it. Favouritism and group-think is nothing new, and it rears its head everywhere. On this forums, for example, the Rules Cyclopedia is often treated with a bit too much reverence - in my opinion, it is a good, but deeply flawed product. If I followed advice and bought the book on recommendations made here, I would be disappointed too (as I was when I initially bought it... for starters, the art sucks ;)).

As for irritating evangelism, none of it has been more tired, obnoxious and downright revulsion-inducing than Nightfall's constant Scarred Lands-shilling on ENWorld. That guy has turned me so completely off anything having to do with SL that my perception is probably irreversably tainted by his slobbering all over it.

I largely agree with both parts of this post. The RC really is overrated, and I suspect much of the adulation comes from those who haven't picked it up in years. It's good, but not that good.

Nightfall's evangelism does get very, very strident and exasperating. He's not a bad guy, really, he just seems to have no idea when to let up. I think the Scarred Lands is a decent enough setting. It's not exactly my cuppa, but elements of it are cool - Hollowfaust, for example, is one of the coolest RPG cities I've ever seen.

4e definitely has an Old School feel. If you disagree, cool. I won\'t throw any hyperbole out to prove the point.

Gosh, T-Bill and Mr. Christopher posting in the same thread? It makes me feel all warm inside, like I'm back...home.

It's damned good to see some familiar faces hereabouts.

Heh... I vaguely remember that.

I think I just got wood. :)

And Chuck tells me that Kill Bill is one of his inspirations.

I ran a full blown level 1-36 RC D&D campaign; and RC D&D is excellent.  However, it is FAR more limited in the scope of what its able to do than 3.x D&D, and I think that some of the failed expectations people might have of that game come from RC-boosters ridiculously overemphasizing its utility.

Agreed. I just want to emphasize that I think it's good also. Played it only briefly, as AD&D 1e was my game of choice during that era, but enough to know it was good. There's a reason I hung onto it all these years.
