This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Holy crap! Other forums have darlings. . .

Man, I already wrote probably a good essay's worth of responses on the subject of forum darlings the last time this came up, do I have to write it again?

I hate that guy with a passion...I especially love how he comes on so many threads to bash other games, and pimp Wushu as the one true game...then rfreely admits he has never played or read the game he is bashing! Hell, in his last thread he said that he can't read any game book over 58 pages...yet he seems to have a (negative) opinion on every game ever created.

There is another guy posting on RPGnet now, Migo, who seems to post in the same way, many posts, little content, volitile opinions about things he knows little about.

Kiero...Migo...kind of sound sorty of similar.

Odd timing.  Over at #rpgnet we were just discussing the wierd skew in the Gaming Index's rankings, and D&D's place in them.  The only D&D at all in the top 100 corebooks is RC, and OD&D and AD&Ds 1 and 2 are actually ranked in the hundred worst.

Of note is that one of the statistical outliers on the ranking of 3.x, was Kiero giving it a 1.  The cocksucker's never even played the fucking game.

Yeah, but I'm not one of those fans who pitches anything as the one true game :)

Probably because I love to play MANY DIFFERENT games.

I loved True 20 for my Old West game, and thought it worked as well as d20 for my Arthurian game.

But I wouldn't run a dungeon crawl with it in a million years. Which is exactly what (unfortunately) JD tried to do with it, and I'm not surprised the results were disappointing.

I was asked by a big publisher to write a book on "action fantasy" for True 20, and I demurred, precisely because I came to the conclusion awhile ago that True 20 wasn't really a good fit for that genre.

He strikes me as being incredibly insecure, desperate for others to see things the way he does in order to get some kind of validation. I don't dislike him as such, I just think it's a little sad that someone who's so desperate to game has set up so many self-imposed roadblocks.

He needs to have a few beers, unwind and rattle some dice. Fuck the system concerns, just play the damned thing. And stop wasting your time on writing 20 000 half arsed objections on why you 'can't' or 'won't', it's little more than flame bait.

Well, not to get too far off topic, but I think that's pretty indicative of why those rankings should be taken with a grain of salt.   I think a lot of folks rank products or hype them just to fit in, or be part of the cutting-edge hipster crowd.  ENWorld, Big Purp, wherever--it's just like any other hobby, you'll have a form of that.

Some people just like to hate, and love the soapbox of internet forums for doing it (despite how ignorant they are).  I just posted this over on RPGnet, it certainly fit’s this discussion too:

There are a number of things that have been increasingly irritating and hard for me to bear on RPG forums. One is people who pimp a game for no better reason than that they like it. This alone wouldn’t be bad, but said pimping is usually done on a thread that isn’t even looking for another system, or asking opinions on totally different systems. Even worse is pimping a game while totally ignorant of the other games a poster is talking about…a game can’t be “the greatest ever” if you have no idea about how it actually stacks up against the other games that you know nothing about!

Second are people who hate games, and take every opportunity to crap on them, especially on threads that are relatively positive, until they rear their ugly heads (D&D threads seem to be especially popular for this).

I just got irritated with it because I've been feeling the itch to acquire a new book of some sort or another, and I thought, "Hey, maybe the Index will be helpful, surely there's at least some interesting things that've filtered through", and instead I got what was basically a who's who of RPGnet darlings, and on the flipside, a list of it's favorite attack targets (Almost every single Palladium corebook manages to find it's way into the 100 worst . . .)

I mean, you'd think with such a large userbase, that the statistical anomalies would filter themselves out a bit, due to the reduced effort int just giving a rating to a book, as compared to posting about it.  In most places, the lower the required effort, the more participation, but apparently the effect isn't in play here.

This is extremely petty, but, I'm glad to see that he rubs other people the wrong too.  I don't know how many potential posts I've deleted before actually submitting them in response to his things he has said just because I feel it's better for everyone involved to keep it in.

Quite frankly, the impression I have gotten over the years, is that basically everyone hates him.  I have absolutely no fucking idea how the hell he hasn't been banned yet.

Not the same person -- I met Migo at the FLGS yesterday and had a good chat and ran a simple demo of Reign.  He's a 2e fan (had his books with him) and pretty open minded.  He's also got a regular game and it ain't Wushu.  :D

Yeah. The index rating are a joke, really. In that regard, the Index is less a reflection on game quality or popularity that it is on the petty nature of gaming culture online.

You can't get banned for ignorance (otherwise I would have gotten banned long ago! ;).

In any case, this forum is bad for my health, he has a thread up right now about True 20 with a refference to Star Wars Saga...right after reading a thread where he claims that he only needs Wushu and doesn't read any RPG book over 58 pages long, and I just had to bud in with something cocky!  Thanks to all you buttheads!:p

True.  Case in point, when I saw how low a score Savage Worlds had I posted over on the SW boards, and the game went up like 20 places in a day because of all the people there coming to it's defense.

The Index is time sensitive.  As it continues to progress forward it will become more and more accurate and helpful.  The best way to make this happen is to just go through and rate things.

Besides, the index is set up to be insulated against heavy manipulation by devaluing the ratings of folk rating just a few items.
