This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Historical Campaigns

Quote from: RPGPundit;1036935How many purely historical campaigns have you run? Games that had no magic or sci-fi stuff in them.  Note that 'historical' here could technically be anything from the stone age to 2017.

I prefer Mythic campaigns, based on the stories, myths and legends, which normally have some kind of magic. Something like Robin Hood doesn't have any magic, normally, so is kind of an exception, but I'd heavily use Robin of Sherwood, which had a lot of magic. Fairy Tales and Folk Ballads are chock-full of magic and I use them as a big inspiration.

I'm just curious, what time would you guys think of as that era? To me, it has always been mainly the 1600s, but to many others I have noticed that they think of it as late 1700s - early 1800s (maybe influenced by the Bounty and Master & Commander), and then there are some who prefer earlier, like 1500s.

Indeed, there are at least three major eras of piracy you could use between the 17th and 19th century, though roughly 1650-1730 is reckoned the "golden age".

I've run multiple historical campaigns. I love them.

One of my favourites was a Men's Adventure (Rider Haggard and that sort of thing) campaign in which the players were convinced that the supernatural existed. There were no overt supernatural occurrences, and in fact no covert ones either, everything had a mundane rational explanation, but my players kept seeing spooks in the shadows. "It's an RPG so there must be *real* fantastic elements" seemed to be their thinking.

That's an easily understood prior assumption on their part. It also sounds like an awesome time was had by all. And, really, isn't that why we game in the first place?

Quote from: GameDaddy;1037494Also have been looking at doing some historical Indian campaigns, and/or recreating stories of the Mahabharata with Arrows of Indra, however have just not had any spare time to build a game around that. Plus I really need more Indian Minis, and Elephnats...

While more mythological than historical, that would be totally awesome! If you ever run it please tell us how it goes.
