This is a post I already did at RPG.net, but I think here's more suited to my tastes.
It's a thought about d20 Modern as I like it. See, I loathed d20. Because I was an ignorant. I didn't understood D&D3. It seemed complicated and... not realisic (hoooooooo... says the crowd). But probably it was because I was in a time of my life in which everything was complex and didn't have time to delwe in RPGs.

Then I restarted buying RPGs, taking d20 only because it's played around here. And you know? I like it a lot.

So, I got into d20. And so? Remember I'm a badass so I urge you not to comment on this part of the post. The why and when is simple: it's the only way to get someone to play in this damn town.
Infact, since the day I decided to join the d20 party, I restarted playing in D&D 3.5 and know what? I have fun and find d20 pretty cool.
Soon, I'll lure those poor guys who has Greyhawk as a setting in the joys of being slaughtered in Midnight.

Regarding the subject of the thread, I am a great fan of Kult. And of FPS. And of stuff like Millennium's End and Millennium (the TV serie).
But how to make the losers play Kult? Or another modern horror RPG? No way.

So I got d20 Modern, and I like it a lot.

Fuck! You'll say. It' NOT realistic.
Ah, no?
- take out FX (magic)
- add the following sourcebook:
* Blood and Guts modern military with his DEADLIEST rules
* d20 Somalia and Colombia for some foreign horror
* Modern Players' Companion to add some flexibility
* d20 Dark*Matter
* The Book of Unremitting Horror

But it's a lot of splatbooks! You say.
And so? Don't you buy all the supplements of Unknown Armies, or nWOD, or Exalted? Isn't the same thing?
So you'll have a great reading material, great setting stuff, and a system that's flexible, easy to learn, made lethal with a little crunch, has a great followers base in this town. Campaign material for ages and ages.
And I'm enjoying reading this stuff, a lot.

Any comment or suggestion is appreciated.

BTW: I'm thinking of interweaving adventures in Colombia, in a horror campaing for ex-military PCs, titled "Carnage in Colombia"... it will use (adapted) some scenarios I got from the Wizards website, the scenarios in Colombia d20 + some horror from Dark*matter or Book of Unremitting Horror, and probably will finish with the free scenario for Kult: Jungle Apocalypse (found on the web).

I'm not a big proponent of using D20 Modern for anything "realistic".

BUT

I have said before and will say again: it's the supplmenents (particular from third party publishers) that make d20 Modern great.

At its core, d20 Modern is a bland ruleset. But it's solid (with the painful exception of rules for fully automatic firearms), self-consistent, and easily extended. I've seen tepid "first run" d20 RPGs like Sidewinder and Darwin's World tranformed into great games by adding them to d20 Modern. RPG Objects' Blood series and Blue Devil Games' Dawning Star are also gold. And D20 modern has been the baseline for some great spins and variants like Grim Tales and Etherscope.

I pretty much agree with Caesar Slaad.  Taken on its own d20M is workmanlike but not exciting, but the 3rd party support at RPGnow is fabulous.

What about WotC's sourcebooks? (d20 Future, etc)

I'm a Sci-fi guy and I really like d20 future it comes in second to GURPS space but it is still a really good book IMO.

I also think that D20 Modern is superior to D&D just for the fact that it can be used for any type of game you want to play.

d20 Menace is very very good. It contains lots of stuff, monsters, NPCs, Organizations.

d20 Dark*Matter is great, too. But from what I understood it's not worth for people who already has Alternity (?). There are lots of organizations, conspiracies, alternate history, etc.

Both books are lavishly produced, if a little thin for their price.

Completely agree.
Blood and Guts, d20 Real life roleplayin (colombia & somalia) are very good.
Modern players companion is a must, too.

If you like those suppliments, you should check out Year of the Zombie.  It's a survival horror d20 modern suppliment that I'm betting would be right up your alley.  I recently posted a review on here, RPGnet, and ENWorld.

The d20 Menace book has Scientologists in it and that makes rainbows and kittens.

Agreed. I think Year of the Zombie is a great d20 Modern sourcebook for a gritty, balls-out Dawn of the Dead game.

It's PDF, but RPGNow has print on demand.  So you order it, the have it printed and bound into a book and shipped to you.  I've not gotten one of these, but I've heard they're pretty good quality print-wise.
