This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

No Rakasta In 3.5?

Quote from: SosthenesArgue about dungeonpunk whatever you will, but japanimation cliches aren't that common (most who do exist probably got in the game through the obvious video game inspirations)...

Dungeonpunk isn't...  quite... Anime.

Close, but there are telling differences.

What would it take to do a direct conversion?

Pulling from the Savage Coast material, Rakasta have:

Rakastas have excellent balance and reflexes, taking only half damage from any fall.

The way things mitigate falls in 3.5 is to treat the fall as if it were shorter (monk slow fall, tumble check, psionic cat fall ability). I recommend the same here.

Excellent balance suggest balance bonus.

They have infravision with a range of 60 feet.

Low light vision.

Also, they have excellent hearing and some special instincts. Together, these give rakastas three special abilities: detecting invisible or ethereal beings, blind-fighting, and detecting noise.
When confronted with invisible creatures, a rakasta receives a +4 bonus to any saving throws made for detection (as explained under "Invisibility" in Chapter 13 of the DMG). A rakasta automatically gets a saving throw (with the bonus) when an invisible creature approaches within 10 feet and during every round the invisible being remains that close.

Blind fight feat is a cinch.

As for the rest, 3.5 also has pretty detailed locating invisible rules. So, perhaps in addition to a flat listen check bonus, give them a free check like elves get and a situational bonus in detecting invisible creatures nearby.

A normal rakasta also has a 20% chance to hear noise like a thief. Rakasta thieves can further improve upon this ability,

More listen check bonus stuff. (As a side note, this examination is illustrating to me, once again, that 3.5's treatment of topics is not more complex than prior editions.)

Because of their keen senses, rakastas receive a -1 penalty on their saving throws against attacks based on sound (such as a banshee's wail or a harpy's song).

Can keep as is, possibly add sonic vulnerability.

Rakasta bonuses: Were +2 Dex, -2 Wis. Could keep that as is, but it sorta of goes against the grain of their listen bonus, which adds additional justification that their listen bonus be large (+4 or more, maybe +8 to locate invisible creatures.)

Favored class... well, oddly enough, the 2e class they were unlimited in was Bard, though I never saw them as bards. (Shrug)

Edit: So
  • +2 Dex, - 2 Wis
  • Treat all falls as 10' shorter for purposes of damage. Stacks with other such effects, as monk's slow fall and the tumble skill.
  • +2 to racial bonus to balance checks and +4 racial bonus to listen checks.
  • The +4 racial listen check bonus raised to +8 for purposes of checks to detect or locate unseen opponent.
  • Blind fight as a bonus feat.
  • -1 to saves versus spells or abilities with the sonic descriptor.
  • Favored class: Bard (?still sketchy on that one)

Most of the time it's not even that close. What I meant to say is that even though WotC get lots of complaints against their current art direction, being close to Anime isn't one of them..
Considering how many available artists are influenced by big-eyed crap, this must've been a conscious choice.

thanks for the stats, caesar slaad.  i think i'll transfer them to a 3 level racial class like in the WoWrpg. . . .

Cool. I think it's mostly balanced as is, but you might move an ability or two... or add more... to a 3-level progression.
