Title: [Help] Hex Map of US?
Post by: Zachary The First on January 25, 2008, 12:43:47 AM
Hey guys,

Kinda a weird request, but does anyone have a map of the US (physical features) with a hex overlay?  I'm working on a little project, and I thought I saw one on line a while back, but can't seem to find it.  I was hoping for a map style close to this (http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/national_atlas_1970/ca000043.jpg) or this (http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/united_states/united_states_wall_2002_us.jpg).  I heard I could use Tabletop Mapper to do it, but it seems you can't get that utility anymore (seems to not be hosted).  Anyone be able to help me with this?

Or would you prefer the other map - with gray hex, perhaps?

Those are a couple of quick and dirty.  If you have more time and want something nicer, I could use Fractal Terrains, make a nice bitmap using he real-world data they provide, than put the hex grid on that...

But that would have to wait until sometime tomorrow...

Wow!

I am in your debt, sir!

If you do get time, I am curious what the Fractal Terrains would come out as--would the resolution suffer terribly if the hexes were 50% smaller?  Or possibly apply the same hexes to a higher-res map?  If not, I am still pleased as punch. :)

Thank you so much!  I really appreciate you doing that!!!! :D

Do you want one of these with smaller hexes? That's dependent on how I set them up in CC3. These are set up as, IIRC, a scale of 100 - I could drop them to 75 or 50 (my first pass was fifty and they seemed small) and give you that.  Though probably not until tomorrow - my eyelids are drooping as I type and I have miles to go...

Fractal Terrains will simply give me a decent (bit)map with apparently real-world elevation information instead of one of the jpegs you provided.

Hmm...well, actually, I think the hexes are fine, if the map's original resolution, or at least closer to it, would be possible.  I'll be zooming in for some detail, so that would make it more feasible.

And yeah, hey, whenever.  I just really appreciate you doing this.  Thanks!!!

There is a game called MONSTERS MENACE AMERICA or "MONSTER MAYHEM" that has a great map of the US with a hexgrid all the way across it. Its inb a box the same size as RISK:GODSTORM or RISK : 2210.

The premise of the game is that you and the other players are Japanese movie monster-type monsters stomping across America opposed by the other player's military forces.

I'll check the price of it at work tomorrow for you.

There's an older "Oh, shit!  Nazis are invading America!" style of wargame that had a hexmap of North America, but I'll be damned if I can remember the name of the thing right now.  My favorite part was that pretty much every hex south of the Mason-Dixon line counted as swamp terrain.  Clearly a Yankee behind that map.

Must be SS America. (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/47597)

When my 14 year old self saw that box at the FLGS, I was flabbergasted.

Looks good for Rifts: Wilderlands, no? The map (hotlinked form BGG), that is. The Nazi guys are in Chicago, according to Kev.

That must be the one.  My friend Pat has a copy he bought many years ago at the local con.
