This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Has 5e succeeded in emphasizing Rulings, Not Rules

Quote from: Christopher Brady;1054833Even Crawford has endorsed making your own rulings for AL.  It's the AL people who take his and others words as gospel.  So again, Pundit is wrong and his bias is showing.

Except I'm not because while Crawford might pay lip service to what you said, he still gives single definitive answers to these questions all the time, as if he was the ultimate arbiter of D&D rulings and not a mid-grade writer.

Most of his answers he takes pains to say, "but that's just what I'd do in my game".

But I know your character needs to spin it as something else...

He does say that pretty often. The problem is also gives definitive answers as if he's the authority on it.

Quote from: RPGPundit;1055695He does say that pretty often. The problem is also gives definitive answers as if he's the authority on it.

This dual, almost schizophrenic, type of answer also is a good deal of what is wrong with much of the advice in the WotC DMGs.  Their advice would be improved immensely if they simply adopted into the their formula writing the habit of giving at least two or three options to all such questions.

Rhedyn

5e would be better if no one gave official rulings or "Sage Advice" or errata.

It's the classic issue with all Rules Lighter games. By the process of consistent rulings, every table eventually becomes rules heavy/complete. The only difference is the same tables do not need the same rules for the same things.

Your table might need competitive dance rules, while mine needs warforge that can transform into carts.

The more Jeremy Crawford speaks, the narrower and less useful 5e becomes. Even saying, "well that's how I do it in my games" doesn't work because his words imply authority due to his status as a developer for the game. "Word of God" or "Word of the Author".

RPGPundit

Made even worse by the fact that he's neither.

Crawford isn't doing anything he wasn't doing back when you liked D&D 5e because they took you on as a consultant; you're not railing against SJWs and swine so it's not about politics.

So just making a reasonable inference.

Quote from: rawma;1056353Crawford isn't doing anything he wasn't doing back when you liked D&D 5e because they took you on as a consultant;

Back when I was a Consultant, Crawford was a near-unknown second-level writer whose politics no one paid attention to. He has wormed his way up to a higher influence and a sense of total impunity because of his SJW credentials in a company that has become infested with SJWs, and he's gunning for Mearls' job, so he can fully ruin the game and hobby for his politics.

So yes, this is ABSOLUTELY about politics, dumbass.

He started doing Sage Advice within a couple of months of the last core book being released; it took you over three years to get upset about it? You'd have been railing about SJWs from your very first post in this thread if it was really about his politics, but you weren't, and didn't until the post I'm replying to. So I assume you had a falling out with the D&D team at WOTC; it's more likely that they got tired of you than anything else.

But if you can get them to return your phone calls, you could release a video showing them doing so. I'm not holding my breath.

RPGPundit

Your assumptions  are asinine. I haven't had any contact with WoTC after I FINISHED my work for them after the core books were released. I have no reason to call them over anything.

So you're just bitter they changed what you suggested, then?

To be fair, 5e was a lot better right after release before sage advice and new books solidified some bad rulings as canon. Mearls and Crawford have been terrible stewards.

How so?
Battle doesn\'t need a purpose; the battle is its own purpose. You don\'t ask why a plague spreads or a field burns. Don\'t ask why I fight.
