This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Hackmaster: Funny or not?

My above post was brought to you by the sarcasm council.  I still hear gamers in all of the places mentioned in my above post, still quote Grail all the time and giggle like schoolgirls.  Dude, move on to the fucking "Princess Bride" or something, at least that's 10 years more recent.

I dont get why you seem so upset about some people you dont even know having fun with something they seem to enjoy. it may be tired and played out to you but it could be that some of those people just saw the movie. Or it could just be that they find it more amusing than you did either way just say "not my thing" and move on. no need to put down those that are having a good time.

I'm not really upset, it's more of a  moment.  It's more of a "Know your audience" moment or maybe a "one-trick-pony" moment.  Like the only riff they know is Grail.  Just as an aside, I'm not picking on Grail, per se. Substitute Grail with Player Character, Ninjas, knives, etc.  I'm just asking for a little variety.

Quote from: daelerit may be tired and played out to you but it could be that some of those people just saw the movie

That is quite possible.  I would give someone a lot more leeway if they were teenagers/early 20's.  I should have mentioned my reference point are 30-somethings that have probably seem the film close to a quintillion times.

I know this might come as a shock, but just because I'm saying that I think Grail is played out on an Internet forum (i.e. I don't find it funny and I wish the people quoting it over and over would get a new routine) doesn't mean that in real life I do not have tact and do not respond appropriately (i.e. walk away, ignore it, etc.).

Who am I putting down? I think I'm describing behaviors which make me roll my eyes at best, or wince at worst. Anyone can do it...I'm sure there may be things I joke about that make people roll their eyes.

But, hey, I'm sure if we look hard enough we can find a victim here, right?

it was the "giggle like schoolgirls" comment that made it seem alittle over the top, and the extreme sarcasm remark after I pointed out a part that I thought was funny. I get the part about wanting more variety, the problem is alot of people look at grail as a classic in comedy and one of the better movies put out by Monty Python. I personally think the meaning of life is just as good. of course at cons your going to get alot of that it seems movies like the holy grail or princess bride or any number of mel brooks movies seem to find a home in the hearts of gammers more than others. who knows why. My point was I put out something that I thought was funny and got a huge sarcastic remark, why? cause you are tired of people liking something for long periods of time? just seemed over the top to me but hey what ever floats your boat.

Thank God fewer kids are watching Grail.  Between that and Hitchhiker's Guide I gave up more of my teenage years to geek "humor" than I care to think about.

To me those jokes are less about humor and more about instant tribal identification: you hear someone do the Sir Robin bit, you think "I am safe with this person, he will not mock my terrible haircut and Death Dealer shirt."  Geek Social Fallacies kick in and...

So the old American geek concept is to blame (again).  As time goes by, more and more people become geeks for one thing or other.  So geek shorthand will be more varied, at least.

This could be part of it (My comment in the middle of page 4):

Maybe you hadn't read the earlier part of the thread where I sounded off on Grail references. Then, a page later, to prove hackmaster was funny, you talk about "Vorpal Bunny".  I countered with sarcasm.  Someone else may have said "I love the Vorpal Bunny!".  Different strokes.

You'll find that theRPGsite is a wreteched hive of scum and villany...and I, I am the Walrusman.

At least not openly....:)  Dude, I had a Paranoia RPG shirt, it was green. Meaning I had Green Level security clearance...There's my confession.

Its all good, just thought to put my 2cents in. just as a warning tho I will quote Grail on occasion altho it isn't the only movie I quote, I just happen to have diversified outside of Grail and occasionally hit Brooks or "bride" plus a few others. And I think it was said before humor is VERY subjective.

Is paranoia any fun? I have heard it is a blast but have yet to find anyone with the game.

I can see where this could be true (and probably is) but then for me and most of the people I hang out with the occasional quote is just something to be funny with.

And I am one of those type people who if you mock my shirt I mock whatever happens to be handy right back. course with the advent of ThinkGeek.com shirts will become mocking on their own.

by the way the whole I mock you thing made me think of Oz in Buffy "I mock you with my monkey pants"

Hmmm ...

I enjoyed skimming through the HM books in the gamestore, even chuckling from time to time, but I couldn't imagine actually purchasing those books, or reading 200+ pages of the stuff.

HM reminds me of those full length films made out of characters/skits from SNL (e.g. Coneheads, Pat, etc.).  It just doesn't work.

Quote from: rcsample... Additionally, I would add that Rolemaster's humor is more "Easter egg" style than "Keep it coming/Hackmaster" style....

Yeah, that's correct.  :)

In the experience system within the 1e RM Character Law, PCs can get experience points for destroying 'jewels' within active volcanoes.  It was written in a straightforward, 'deadpan' manner.  Which is what made it funny when reading the rules for the first time.

So you're basically a completely insufferable geek stereotype oozing pure annoyance?

This is nothing to be proud of. Try considering what it's like for others to be around you.
In order to qualify as a roleplaying game, a game design must feature:

1. A traditional player/GM relationship.
2. No set story or plot.
3. No live action aspect.
4. No win conditions.

Don't like it? Too bad.
