This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Was it meant to be funny? Absolutely.

Is it actually funny? Well, its good for a few chuckles, some of the art is VERY funny.

Melan

Its basic concept is funny, and not just funny, but very cleverly so. Insider's humour, but that's to be expected. Unfortunately, it couldn't be consistently kept up... the Hacklopedias, for example, are a mixture of the good and the uninspired (the two volumes I own, anyway).

Yes, you're dead-on about the inability of the designers to maintain the humor. The PHB and GMG were their best work, and the Hacklopedias taken as a whole are funny. But beyond those, and Little Keep on the Borderlands, the humor is spotty. The concept of the Temple of Existential Evil is both cool and funny, though.

4e definitely has an Old School feel. If you disagree, cool. I won\'t throw any hyperbole out to prove the point.

Hence my earlier SNL comment. Or to put it another way:

Dude, "'Tis but a flesh wound" from Monty Python and the Holy Grail was funny the first couple times I saw the movie. Having heard it another 10000 times since in various gaming circles, not so much....

That's one of the reasons I like Labyrinth more than Holy Grail nowadays. HG was great, but Labyrinth doesn't see as much quoting. So things like Sir Didimus's "I shall conquer this mountain!" are still funny when you see them again.

Ancient History

I voted funny. I had a great two-man campaign going once.

Hoggle: "Ignore them. They're just false alarms. You get them in the Labyrinth, especially when you're on the right track."

False Alarm: "Oh no, you're not."

Hoggle: "Oh, shut up."

False Alarm: "Sorry. Just doing my job."

Another False Alarm: "BEWARE, for the--"

Hoggle: "Just forget it."

AFA: "Please, I haven't said it for such a long time..."

Hoggle: "Oh, all right, but don't expect a big reaction."

AFA: "No, no, no: of course not... *cough* --for the PATH you take will LEAD to certain DESTRUCTION!"

Whoa!  Ease up, there, Slick!  I only said that it never grabbed my attention enough to sway my funny vote one way or the other.

Humor is hard to do right, so if HM is funny, I'll be surprised.  But it's not a given thing that it isn't funny.

There needs to be a third, stronger "anti-funny" choice.

I guess the fact that you actually spent money on it can be considered a single successful joke. On you, but still.
In order to qualify as a roleplaying game, a game design must feature:

1. A traditional player/GM relationship.
2. No set story or plot.
3. No live action aspect.
4. No win conditions.

Don't like it? Too bad.

True...but some humor is timeless.

I think HackMaster is funny but overdone.  A boxed set with 64 pages of Basic HackMaster rules and a 32 page module would be completely awesome.
