This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Gygax Magazine unboxing action report

I was on the live streaming for the Gygax Magazine unboxing, and it was great. The mag looks like it has good production value, a range of different articles about the gaming community, games and the like, it's not outrageously expensive ($35 for a 4-issue subscription, it's a quarterly mag, apparently), it's going to try to appeal to all styles of tabletop gaming, from board and miniatures game to role playing games obviously, and not just the "old school", and the guys seem to have their act together.

You can rewatch the whole unboxing on the website if you missed it: http://gygaxmagazine.com/

There are small issues (a bunch of people reported some free shipping charges when trying to subscribe internationally, which seems totally unrealistic, and the guys behind the mag are checking this out now), but all in all, it really went well, and looks promising. Exciting times.

Oh, PDF, digital etc will be supported as well as the print mag itself. I remember that was asked here.

The first issue cover looks great. It reminded me of the old Dragon Magazine which, of course, is a good thing.

"Reminded you of" or "looked exactly like"?

"Well worth reading."  -- Steve Winter

"...seriously nifty stuff..." -- Bruce Baugh

"[Erik is] the Carrot-Top of role-playing games." -- Jared Sorensen, who probably meant it as an insult, but screw that guy.

No. When you hit the "buy now" button you'll see a choice between buying just the first issue or going for the full 4-issue subscription.

OK yeah. :)

Wow, shipping down under is kinda expensive: USPS (Priority Mail International) $71.30 which is about $17 per magazine.

I'll be moving right along then.

If it looked exactly like then it reminded me. ;)

Wow, that really does look like Dragon. The only difference was that in some of the issues it had the price closer to the issue number, rather than just above the left column of the text. But in later issues (90+) that's where it was too.

Personally I like the look, but I have to wonder if that won't cause problems

I don't think it will cause legal problems, but I'm certainly not impressed by it, any more than I presume a product that apes the look of AD&D modules is necessarily any good.

There's "nod to what has come before" and then there's needless fetishism.

Now, if the second issue is done up to look like an issue of Dragon from a whole different era?  That would be kind of impressive.  But I don't think that'll be the case.

This looks pretty cool alright.  Is there a contents page or description to view about some where?  I didn't see one at the site.

Very cool that they kept the exact cover layout.

Also, excellent cover art. Actually tells a story like the old mag covers did.
