Title: GURPS, awarding GURPS Character points...
Post by: Koltar on April 17, 2023, 02:04:09 PM
Hello GURPS 4/e GMs or Reffs...

How many characters points Do You give or award after each Game Session?

Just wondering what the average or norm is for other GMs.

In my current campaign I have been giving 3 points after each game session. The player who often keeps notes or a character log - if she e-mails that to me she gets an extra point.

Depends on much time passes during a session. In my campaigns, it was way too fast. As explained here

and  here
https://batintheattic.blogspot.com/2015/01/gurps-time-and-experience.html

The problem of using the recommended method of GURPS experience is that for certain types of campaigns, the character can unrealistically become very experienced in a short amount of time. I have had campaigns where characters went from 100 points to 200 points in two months of game time! Part of the problem is that the way I run the campaign results in the player often opts to do things nearly every hour of every game day. So a session may cover only a day or two of game time. 60 days of game time could wind up being 15 to 20 game sessions with awards of 2 to 4 cp each. And there are many times when a game day takes two or three sessions to resolve.

Ultimately what we went with this

It worked out well.

Three's usually about right.  None if you let your dependant get killed (or kill them), and one less if you're violating your disadvantages with self control rolls.

Pretty by the book really.  For some campaigns, say a zero to hero dungeon game you might hand out as much as 10 points per session but expect your players to come to expect it.
