This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Hello GURPS 4/e GMs or Reffs...

How many characters points Do You give or award after each Game Session?

Just wondering what the average or norm is for other GMs.

In my current campaign I have been giving 3 points after each game session. The player who often keeps notes or a character log - if she e-mails that to me she gets an extra point.

Depends on much time passes during a session. In my campaigns, it was way too fast. As explained here

and  here
https://batintheattic.blogspot.com/2015/01/gurps-time-and-experience.html

The problem of using the recommended method of GURPS experience is that for certain types of campaigns, the character can unrealistically become very experienced in a short amount of time. I have had campaigns where characters went from 100 points to 200 points in two months of game time! Part of the problem is that the way I run the campaign results in the player often opts to do things nearly every hour of every game day. So a session may cover only a day or two of game time. 60 days of game time could wind up being 15 to 20 game sessions with awards of 2 to 4 cp each. And there are many times when a game day takes two or three sessions to resolve.

Ultimately what we went with this

  • Like Runequest if you use a skill in a situation with consequences and succeeded you placed a tick mark.
  • You can convert the tick mark to a roll for CP with a day rest. If you rolled over your skill you get a character point. If you rolled a 17 or 18, (18, if your skill, is 17 or higher) you get 2 points.
  • If you rolled a critical success during the game you get 1 cp in that skill.
  • You get 1 cp for every 45 game days as "On The Job" training. You can spend this on anything within reason.
  • You get 1 free cp at the end of every session and another for achieving a significant goal (personal or party). The award for significant goal achievement did not occur often. You can spend this on anything within reason.

It worked out well.

Three's usually about right.  None if you let your dependant get killed (or kill them), and one less if you're violating your disadvantages with self control rolls.

Pretty by the book really.  For some campaigns, say a zero to hero dungeon game you might hand out as much as 10 points per session but expect your players to come to expect it.
