Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). Greg Costikyan, IS a well-known Game Designer dude

Quote from: GameDaddy;418459For the record here, I'm against releasing any game if I know in advance it will harm or destabilize the players.

That makes good business sense. You can not sell splat books if your customers are locked down in institutions.

But again, you really could be Conal Cochran from Silver Shamrock Novelties, and you just want us to believe your intention is not to harm or destabilize us.
Well I'm not falling for it Mr. Cochran! Not now, not ever! Hehehe! Never, ever!

Wow, I think I am gonna get my head ripped off, but from all those names the only ones I recognize are Kenneth Hite (he writes a column), Dave Arneson (needs no introduction) and Kevin Siembieda (for his less than stellar business practices).
But then I was born in 1981, when those gentlemen had their big days I was 3-5 years old. I actually had to use google to find that out.

The designers I (and many in my generation) find worth remembering are more along the lines of Fred Hicks, Luke Crane... perhaps Monte Cook or Greg Stafford (to bridge the gap between generations a little).

Koltar

Luke crane?

Puh...leeze!

Too young , too recent.

Monte Cook?
Give him 10 to 15 years. A little seasoning might do him  good. (humility too maybe)

You are pretty arrogant. What are your big contributions to the gaming world - beside the formerly mentioned straightening out of shelves in a gaming store that is?

DKChannelBoredom

Heh, I've even met Greg Costikyan... and we don't get that many rpg writers to Denmark I can tell ya. But I couldn't remeber what games he was/is involved in.

I also know next to none of those people Koltar namedrops - maybe because I'm too young or maybe because I never played much D&D/AD&D... but yes, I know both the Jacksons.

The nifty thing about the internet is that everyone here can go over and read the thread for themselves and see you are completely full of bullshit. Not that it seems to stop anyone from trying to play martyr after getting caught trolling.

I don't know how the things are in the States, but let me say this: Greg Costikyan was a well known name in RPF fandom here in Spain back in the 90s. Yes, it may be due to the fact that the only RPGs available were Paranoia, Star Wars, Pendragon, James Bond (!?), AD&D, Rolemaster and Rune Quest. But think about it: Mr. Costikyan was well known in the RPG equivalent of the Third World! This must mean something.
CAUTION: Non-native english speaker ahead. Please be nice.

I'd add a couple more to the list of well known game designers as well. These guys were just finishing up as I was getting started as a gamer

Charles S. Roberts, founder of Avalon Hill, recently deceased...

and

Jim Dunnigan, founder of SPI
http://jimdunnigan.com/

I had the good fortune of meeting James "Jim" Dunnigan a few years back as he was a guest of honor at Origins. He spent alot of time at that show with Frank Chadwick.

Oh, for Koltar, just thirty+ years of sponsoring games at his table and promoting RPG games in general.

I got offered employment as writer for Iron Crown Enterprises just prior to them hiring Monte Cook, but I turned Pete Fenlon down cold for the ridiculously low pay he offered.

I think Monte took him up on that and really worked for peanuts for awhile. He only really saw his gaming career take off after he left ICE when it went bankrupt the first time in 1996-1997.

Koltar has introduced many hundreds of ordinary citizens to RPG games by sponsoring and hosting RPG events. He's done this consistently for the decade that I have known him, and probably just as much before.

He regularly attends the two largest RPG shows Origins and GenCon. While there he greets, meets, and speaks at length to game designers and publishers frequently. My observation has been that the game publishers are very respectful to Koltar because they know that he's on the frontline and his recommendations in Sci-Fi city can make or break the sales of thier games. You should get a clue from this.

Up until recently, for many years he was barely compensated(They did give him a great hotel room right reasonably close to the convention center) to attend GenCon in order to help organize and run the Klingon Jail & Bail, the proceeds of which are many thousands of dollars which then went to the GenCon charity fund... which is then distributed to local non-profit organizations. I'm sure he did this at some other conventions too, as I remember seeing them at some local conventions as well...

Koltar spent his time having fun at GenCon, and helped make GenCon a generous and good organization for the benefit of the community that hosts GenCon.

Dominik, your turn. What have you done for gaming? Are you published at least?

Within the hobby, I'd also say Kevin Siembieda (for good or for ill) and Erick Wujcik are also fairly well-known game designers.

Man, I really miss the Wuje.

FWIW, I've definitely seen Koltar making the rounds at Gen Con, both as an attendee and helping organize/run the Klingon Jail n' Bail.  The gentleman is definitely a positive asset to the hobby.

Same as you two. Nothing really. But then I don't go around bashing random authors, so I probably don't need to have done anything special.
And don't feed me the bullshit about what you would have done if you had taken whatever offer decades ago. Nobody cares. Or how one person in your opinion has any amount of influence on whether a game makes it or not. That's just beyond ridiculous and honestly I would have expected a tad more realism from gentlemen as old as you two obviously are. Get a grip.

I don't see anyone here randomly bashing authors. We've been busy compiling a list of noteworthy RPG designers though, so that the folks that are busy randomly bashing game authors can read up on game design theory, and just maybe have some worthy comments, when it comes to talking about game design.

If you are going to be calling other folks credibility into question, you should count on it that your record of prior contributions for gaming will be looked at, if only to establish whether or not your own comments are credible.

Judge not, lest ye be judged.

Completely off topic, and I do not know Mr Dunnigan at all, so this isn't denigrating him, but I have seen it several times lately (especially in politics) and it makes me roll my eyes so hard I can see the back of my head.

James "Jim" Whatthefuckever.

No shit?  Your nickname is "Jim"?  Like everyone else named 'James'?  Hey, dipshits, that quoted bit in the middle is where you put an unusual nickname, like 'Sparky', 'Assmaster', or 'Killfuck Soulshitter'.  It's not where you put the already well-known and accepted shortening of your name.

This is how it works:

George "Goatfucker" Alonzo
Richard "Cocksmock" Smith
Allan "Creamy-thighs" Ballard

This is not how it works:
Michael "Mike" Peterson
Jeffery "Jeff" McMillan
Johnathon "John" Galifrey

Get with the program, assholes.  If you want people to use the short form, introduce yourself with the short form and use that in correspondence.
