This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: danskmacabre;835907I'd love to see Magic world cleaned up and re-issued.
What's wrong with Magic World?
I'm hoping the Chronicler's Companion get's a push and other MW stuff in the pipe moves along... such as the return of All The World's Monsters.
THEN... maybe... someday... Future World.

(Response to Simlasa, sorry if crossposting.)

I did some proofing/feedback for MW at a late stage, but I'm not sure what got into the final product. I've seen reports that some typos slipped through the cracks. Certainly there are errata at basicroleplaying.org, so those could be incorporated. I've also seen complaints about the art but it all seemed fine to me; I certainly wouldn't want full color art if that increased the price, or glossy pages for the rules text at all.

I do think the map of the default setting could be a bit larger, more detailed, better graphical resolution. And maybe some more extensive info or settlement maps, or a worked adventure. Just enough to get a group on the ground running and whet the appetite for a more detailed presentation, but without overburdening the core book for people who intend to use their own setting.

The art is a mix of stuff from older Elric/Stormbringer editions... some new bits or stuff I don't recognize. Not the prettiest book in my house but I didn't buy it to be an art book.
There's some errata for it but nothing unusual for a rulebook that size and scope.
I'd much rather see new content for MW than a new edition at this point just to address minor issues or pimp up its look.

Regarding Magic world.
I'm not too bothered about the art, but I've read in reviews it's not organised very well and yeah typos etc..
Having been burned several times with Mongoose products that were poorly made, organised and suddenly dropped, I have a low tolerance for poor production.
It's unlikely I'll buy a Mongoose product again for those reasons, although I've been historically pretty happy with Chaosium products, but I haven't bought any Chaosium stuff for many years.
I think the last Chaosium product I bought was the last edition of Stormbringer/Elric they supported and that was a long time ago.

I'll probably get it at some stage, but it's not at the top of my "to buy list" , seeing as I have lots of Elric/Stormbringer RPG versions and supporting materials anyway.
Buying Magic world for me is more for a good read than actually using it to run an RPG, unless there's something about it that makes it better than Stormbringer.
I think if I were to run that sort of game again given what I currently own , I'd probably use 5th edition.
I'm sort of turned off Legend, RQ6, MRQ2. They're way more fiddly than I can be bothered with anymore.
5th Edition gets it about right for me.

I have been intrigued by Magic World for some time though. I expect I'll get it eventually.

If you would like a chance to game with Sandy Peterson, he is the Guest of Honor at CelestiCon this year. It's a cool SF Bay Area convention over Labor Day Weekend.

Well, I know of that one 'anonymous' rant against MW on Tenkar's Tavern... which was pretty roundly shouted down as I recall.

Whatever issues MW might be perceived to have I'm pretty sure it doesn't come close to the sort of shoddy crap Mongoose has sometimes shoveled out.
Of the last dozen things I've bought from Chaosium Magic World and Advanced Sorcery stand out. Blood Tide and Astounding Adventures both disappointed me a bit for different reasons... but MW has been gold.
Even though I do have various editions of Stormbringer I like having most all of those rules in one book... but yeah, if you've already got that stuff the impetus to purchase is less.

danskmacabre, whatever may be wrong with MW is definitely minor compared to Mongoose. About the only thing I would take issue with in and of itself, and I'm remembering very vaguely, is that demon summoning isn't as refined as in the Elric/SB stuff. That gets added back in Advanced Sorcery.

In comparison to Elric/SB I think very, very little is changed that doesn't have to do with filing off the Moorcock IP. It does become a bit regularized/genericized to match the BGB standard; I think this is noticeable in the rules for special hits and the critical hits/grievous wounds chart itself. Basically it's the rulebook I would tell players to get as a baseline reference, but unless you were going to obsess over playing RAW, your old stuff is ok for house ruling.

The one exception is the Southern Reaches setting. It doesn't get a whole lot of pages, but as I said it has promise.

At a cursory search I came up with this link.

The bit that put me off the most is this part:

Book (78%)

The MW book is a mixed bag. The layout and artwork is quite good and for the most part the text is clear and concise. Downsides are the typos and the occasional mistakes and/or contradictory text and these serve to annoy rather than confuse. Overall the book is not as polished as it should be and it would have greatly benefited from one more review before going to the printers. I rank the book 78%.

Especially the bit about mistakes, contradictory text etc.

Like I earlier said, having bad experiences with Mongoose and some of their terrible production quality, I decided not to bother with MW at the time.
I probably was being over critical, but yeah I have loads of Stormbringer stuff anyway.

I certainly feel like a return to the simpler BRP , as opposed to RQ6, Legend.
that is if I were to run a BRP type system at all.
It's hard to find people will to play alternatives to DnD type games where I am ATM.

I think Openquest and CoC are currently the simplest implementations of D100/BRP rules.

Same here, which is why I've been playing a lot of online games where it's not hard at all to find non-D&D groups.

Thanks Arminius, for the clarification.

It does sound like an interesting RPG. I've not seen it in any of my LGSs thus far.
I'll probably get it at some stage online when I feel the urge, seeing as I am a bit of a Moorcock fan.

I'm not that bothered about the setting not being fleshed out much, as I have so much Elric/SB material and have read all the Elric books many times over the years.
Actually I've read most of Moorcock's work several times over many years.

I've heard of Openquest, not read it though. I love CoC, which is great fun.
It doesn't need to be complex anyway, given if you get into combat you're probably going to die or go mad anyway.  ;)
I'm currently playing in an infrequent CoC 7th ed game, which is fun.
I don't have a lot of opinion about the rules for 7th ed CoC really, as it's more about RP than getting into the rules, so I haven't had an opportunity to form an opinion about it.
I remember Character gen was a bit of a faff, but the game seems to play out well enough.

Yeah I really ought to give that a go sometime.

Yeah, give it a try... there are the same potential pitfalls as face-to-face groups: annoying Players, bad GMs, people not showing up for game... but with the added feature of finding groups for a MUCH wider variety of systems/settings. Various trade-offs but a solid option... it's also how I found a group to try out 5e with, which was great fun.

I had a glance at Roll20 and will try out a game using that (as in playing not running) one day.
If it feels comfortable enough I would probably give it a go running an RPG using Roll 20.

The guy who runs CoC is one of the DnD players I run 5E for.
I think he'd probably be up for something other than DnD for me to run, but he's the only one. Everyone else just wants to play DnD.

If I could get players for them, I'd probably run "Stars without number" with "Other Dust" plugged in sometimes for my Scifi kick and Stormbringer 5th Ed for fantasy.
Although if there was interest in Stormbringer, I'd probably buy MW, as that'd be enough motivation to tip me over the edge to actually get it, as I'd be actually using it.

danskmacabre

I had a look at the pricing for the Magic World and Advanced sorcery PDFs.
That's quite pricey for a PDF. It certainly puts it out of the impulse buy category for me.
If I were to use it, I'd probably have to get both the core book and the Advanced sorcery book by the sounds of it.

I think I'll hold off for now and until/if I'm actually going to run Elric/SB or something like it and then probably splash out on the physical books, rather than PDFs, as I don't really feel like paying that price just for PDFs.

Thinking about it further, what does MW have that SB5 doesn't?
Assuming I was going to run an RPG in the Young Kingdoms anyway?

Look like Chaosium is cleaning out the warhouse a bit... they just announced a big sale . Looks like 50% off monographs for both BRP and CoC... and %75 off any old Elric/Stormbringer stuff they've got left laying around. Even the FF boardgames are on deal.

I might have break open the piggy bank for this...
