This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Which is a bad marketing strategy to pursue for so many decades.

Pretty sure Greg Stafford isn't doing focus groups and going "hey guys, sales might go up 3% if I repudiate ducks". Creative people can be very don't give a fuck about things like that.

Quote from: Vile;858120If it's not a secret, will that be BRP and through Chaosium, or Alephtar's upcoming Revolution D100, or something else entirely? I ask because I need to decide whether to take someone up on their offer to sell me their copy, or to wait for the new one. :)

The cat's out of the bag on Merrie England.
QuoteAlephtar already has several settings ready to adapt to Revolution D100 – Merrie England being the one already included in this crowdfunding as a reward

No offense, but the title "Merrie England" suggests a tone that doesn't appeal to me. (I think the cover of one of the previous editions contributed to this impression.) If the idea is a slightly silly, Golden Age of Hollywood version of Medieval England, then the title & cover are spot-on, just not my cup of tea for d100.

Yeah, I actually like the ducks... but I had to find my own context for them. Also, I want them very duck-like... not duck-headed men as some of the Mongoose illustrations depict them. I don't think they're out of place in wilder settings like Arduin or... whatever default setting DCC implies.

Well, Merrie England has medieval backgrounds and professions, magic from several sources (Major religions, folk magic, guardians), descriptions of religious orders and heresies and so on. There is a heavy emphasis on Chivalry, Courtly Love, Minstrels and Troubadours. It isn't really Golden Age Hollywood Medieval England, although that is one of the general influences.

I am old-school RuneQuest, so I like limbs being chopped off, archers hiding in the Greenwood and shooting the Sheriff's men from afar and a Wild Ogre being able to rip an opponent in half. So, from that point of view, it is pretty gritty.

I also like the idea of a troubadour being as important to a party as a knight.

Generally, my idea of Merrie England was something where I could play in the same setting as Robin of Sherwood, Ivanhoe, any of the Robin Hood films/TV Series, Kingdom of Heaven and so on.

Thanks for that. It sounds more up my alley based on your description.

That does sound tempting, Simon. Looking at the crowdfunding project and I have a couple of questions before I pitch in:

- Is there somewhere I can see a detailed breakdown of just how Revolution D100 differs from BRP/RQ/OpenQuest/Renaissance/whatever?

- Does the Merrie England supplement related to the campaign include all the stuff in the old version, or were some bits taken out to make room for the Robin Hood stuff?
I am no longer posting here or reading this forum because Pundit has regularly claimed credit for keeping this community active. I am sick of his bullshit for reasons I explain here and I don\'t want to contribute to anything he considers to be a personal success on his part.

I recommend The RPG Pub as a friendly place where RPGs can be discussed and where the guiding principles of moderation are "be kind to each other" and "no politics". It\'s pretty chill so far.

I have that same question. Some of the marketing copy sounds interesting, while other parts don't.

Although, since we foreigners (USA) are required to have a PayPal account, I am unlikely to participate. :(

Paolo would be the best person to answer that, I think.

The campaign is completely new and the campaign in Merrie England: Age of Chivalry will not appear in Robyn Hode. This will be a Robyn Hode campaign, with outlaws struggling against the Sheriff, peasants being oppressed, Kings being ransomed and tax collectors/churchmen being robbed.

As for what won't be included, probably Magical Science, Further Afield, The Crusades, The Afterlife and Angels and Demons. rather than focussing on the reigns of Henry II, Richard I and John I, it sits in the reigns of Richard I and John I, particularly focussing on the period where Richard was in the Holy Land on Crusade and was usurped by John.

Revolution d100?  *sigh*

I don't think that further fragmentation within the BRP family is going to help things...

I expect that BRP Essentials will be based upon a (heavily stripped down) version of RQ6, emphasizing those aspects of RQ6 most similar to traditional BRP.

I expect that 'stripped down' RQ6 is the new skeleton for all future BRP games from Chaosium (except CoC, which will continue in its 7e form for the time being).  (By 'stripped down,' I mean that, e.g., hit locations likely will be optional.)

This makes perfect sense, I think, given the people in charge of RQ game design (Loz and Pete).  And it's a great game as well.

Keeping RQ6 and BRP (Goldbook version) as dual lines is not tenable for a company in Chaosium's condition.  The Goldbook can stay as PDF and POD, but for growing and new lines, expect a RQ core for those.

So that's my prediction.  (Disclosure: I know Loz personally, but none of this reflects anything that he directly told me.  I suspect that he himself is still uncertain as to how things will unfold.)
