This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Greg and Sandy back in charge of Chaosium

Quote from: Jason D;836533More Magic World is definitely coming. It's one of Ben's priorities, and a few books are already completed, in production, or at various stages of development. I wrote a chunk of one of them almost two years ago.

I actually think that more Magic World will be the next thing coming out from Chaosium after CoC7e.
Huh, interesting.

QuoteNews to me. I'd be highly surprised if anything extends beyond increased collaboration.
That's mostly what I was expecting, except I expressed it sloppily - increased collaboration between DM and Chaosium, with the potential for sales through the Chaosium site (who already sell some licensee games).

QuoteGreg has said Pendragon is staying where it is.
Likewise, I didn't expect them to outright cut out Nocturnal's main line from under them, more that they'd promote Nocturnal's Pendragon stuff via Chaosium's website and other presence.

QuoteI'm curious what you mean about other licenses? ElfQuest? Ringworld? Ghostbusters?
I was mostly referring to the Eternal Champion stuff people had enthused about, though if Ghostbusters can be recovered from whatever state the IP has ended up in following the collapse of WEG that would be awesome.

QuoteHonestly, I hope they focus on stability for a while before branching out into genres that haven't done historically well for them. They've got a lot of work ahead of them, and three core game lines (CoC, BRP, and MW) should be enough to keep them busy for the near future.
I agree that new lines are probably a long-term goal. Then again, new lines could always start out as BRP supplements then get their own core if they end up getting sufficient traction to merit it.
I am no longer posting here or reading this forum because Pundit has regularly claimed credit for keeping this community active. I am sick of his bullshit for reasons I explain here and I don\'t want to contribute to anything he considers to be a personal success on his part.

I recommend The RPG Pub as a friendly place where RPGs can be discussed and where the guiding principles of moderation are "be kind to each other" and "no politics". It\'s pretty chill so far.

Quote from: Jason D;836734Hypothetically, what would you want to see in a book like that?
Personally, I'd like to see chapters giving expanded treatment to different genres. For instance, a SF section including systems for starship/vehicular combat and design, cyberware, star system generation, space travel, computer hacking (ranging from the realistic to the Shadowrun-esque) and so on could be really useful.

If I had one criticism of Big Yellow, it's that as a condensation of the BRP rules as they've appeared in Chaosium's BRP games over the years, it means that the book covers some genres much better than others simply because Chaosium put out some 4-6 BRP fantasy games (depending on whether you count Elric/late-edition Stormbringer and early-edition Stormbringer as separate games, and whether you count Pendragon as a mutant cousin of BRP) compared to only one SF game (Ringworld). A Companion which extends the principles of BRP as expressed in Ol' Yeller and applies it to subsystems to support genres that get less love in the core would be great.

Wouldn't it make sense to have an SF-specific book (maybe with a setting by example as with Magic World)  as opposed to a BRP Companion for this?

I was thinking maybe a Companion could expand out from the character-centric rules to more campaign-level tools, like the Factions & Empires books from MRQ. Only thing is that I'm not sure there's a BRP-specific way of doing that stuff, and most BRP-fans probably know where to find those sorts of systems to bolt onto their campaigns.

It seems to me like they are trying to sell off all the licensee games. If the finances are a mess, it might be easier to keep things simple.

Quote from: danskmacabre;836104But atm no-one is making any Moorcock based RPG.
If Chaosium could patch it up with Moorcock, that'd be great.

I don't think so.
No-one under 30 seems to know who MM is.
So much of the 'cool stuff' in MM is in others games, and there are so many copies of MM rpgs out there that it really makes no commercial sense.

Yeah. He's certainly been copied a lot and fur sure, you can get older versions of the RPGs easy enough still.

There was talk of an Elric movie in the works, but it seems to be dragging out or years and may never happen.
But if it does, it'd probably generate more interest in his works again.

There are plenty of us over 40 who only know his name because we play RPGs and see him mentioned. I've only ever glanced at his books and comic book versions and came away uninterested.

Licenses always seem like a mix of curse and blessing to me. Better for Chaosium if they could develop a great in-house setting that could pull folks in... or build on some public domain content that's laying fallow. Choose the path of fewest lawyers.

Well I ordered some stuff from the "new & improved" Chaosium yet cannot get a response from their customer service department as to when to expect it to arrive.  They somehow can send me surveys requesting me to rate the items yet can't seem to bother to send the items or respond to me.

Well, to be fair, we are in the thick of Con season. Origins just wrapped what? Two or three weeks ago? And now everyone is gearing up for GenCon, plus everything in the middle. Their "customer services" department is one guy who wears several hats. Plus they just had that big sale.

Meanwhile those survey requests are automated.

So keep at it, but don't lose your cool over it. Just because the company is under new management doesn't mean they've suddenly become Amazon.

It's a bit unfair to judge anything you just ordered as a reflection of the "new & improved" Chaosium. The announcement was June 2nd, less than a month ago. If my experience working for companies in transition means anything, it might even be messier than ever for a couple of months while things are reorganized. The "new & improved" Chaosium is still being born.

I'll of course be very curious to see just what is new, and what the improvements are.

So, this was announced at Gen Con. In short, it seems that Greg Stafford has convinced Moon Design to buy into Chaosium - hence the bit about them being part of the ownership group - in order to get their management team in on running Chaosium.

Shannon's history of Chaosium makes for eye-bending reading.

As someone with a haphazard interest in CoC ever since the beginning, I was familiar with the various individual events, but it's still amazing to see it summarized all in one place.

I wish the new...old...guys the best of luck. They are going to need it.

There's been an official press release and Shannon's started a thread over at RPGnet about it.

Particularly intriguing to see Runequest back at Chaosium. It seems there will be a new edition, and Loz & Pete will be involved. Looking forward to seeing how this plays out.
