This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Greg and Sandy back in charge of Chaosium

Quote from: mkfort;836148I have a hard time rendering the PDF. Maybe you will have better luck or the physical book. I don't know of anything wrong with the rules.

Whew, you had me worried there...!

Anybody know anything about that Wild West monograph thing and/or Devil's Gulch? Only Western I have is Boot Hill, which is fine, but always looking for something better that isn't overly complex like Aces & Eights or fantastical like just about every other Western RPG I've seen with all the zombies and magic Indians and what not.

Quote from: mkfort;836142Magic World PDF has just been updated to Revised version 1.1 with all known errata included! I'm super happy they hired Ben Monroe and are supporting all their products now. Maybe they can fix Blood Tide next ..

OH that's interesting.  So I wonder if there'll be a new print run with the updated rules.

Maybe now that BMonroe is in charge the line will get enough support and promotion so they can. But none of the errata are really game breaking. It's just great to see them update PDFs because that's great service Chaosium has IMO sucked at recently.

Yeah it's nice to see the errors fixed.
The Steam summer sale will be taking my disposable income atm, but I'll probably grab it and Advanced sorcery in a month or so.
I'll just get the PDFs though.

Quote from: Matt;836147Wait, what's wrong with Blood Tide? Just ordered the damned thing (at a discount, but still).
The copy I have has a few glaring typos and the table of contents seems more like what I'd call an index... but I haven't noticed any glaring issues with the content/rules.

I like Aces High (the western monograph). It's setting is the historical west but it does include optional stats for some folklore creatures and rules for native magic and voodoo.

That table of contents is just downright really weird. The book also had its share of page xx's. I really liked the authors passion though.

Super-glad to see Ben Monroe in his new roles. I have the good fortune to have him as a player in my MagicWorld campaign.

Warthur

Yeah,I reviewed Blood Tide on my blog a while back and whilst there's a lot to like about it, the editing is of a standard that I'd excuse for a monograph but not a professional-grade product.
I am no longer posting here or reading this forum because Pundit has regularly claimed credit for keeping this community active. I am sick of his bullshit for reasons I explain here and I don\'t want to contribute to anything he considers to be a personal success on his part.

I recommend The RPG Pub as a friendly place where RPGs can be discussed and where the guiding principles of moderation are "be kind to each other" and "no politics". It\'s pretty chill so far.

In theory, this can only be a good thing.

But of course, comeback albums two decades after the band broke up tend to never be as good as the first time around was.

On the other hand, The Love of the Last Tycoon was shaping up to be better than anything Fitzgerald had written since The Great Gatsby.

I think that's a more effective statement than mine - thanks. That sort of captures the essence of the recent "Chaosium Curse" for me in many ways.

Yeah, isn't it amazing that Ben Monroe could roll out the updated pdf within a few days of being in the new job. Just shows you how lazy and uninterested the former regime was. I'm sure that this could have been done years ago, probably on a volunteer basis by Mr Monroe, had Chaosium management been remotely interested or aware enough to take a phone call about it.

Quote from: Warthur;836073On the long term expectations, I'm not sure we will see so much of Magic World in the future;

More Magic World is definitely coming. It's one of Ben's priorities, and a few books are already completed, in production, or at various stages of development. I wrote a chunk of one of them almost two years ago.

I actually think that more Magic World will be the next thing coming out from Chaosium after CoC7e.

Quote from: Warthur;836073given how good relations are between Greg and Design Mechanism I wouldn't be too surprised to see them bringing Runequest 6 into the Chaosium tent

News to me. I'd be highly surprised if anything extends beyond increased collaboration.

Quote from: Warthur;836073As far as Chaosium's own games go, I suspect we'll see Nocturnal's current Pendragon line get prominently promoted and sold via Chaosium, and I agree that it'd be nice for them to go chase down some of their old licences.

Greg has said Pendragon is staying where it is.

I'm curious what you mean about other licenses? ElfQuest? Ringworld? Ghostbusters?

Quote from: Warthur;836073That said, Michael Moorcock hasn't had a very happy relationship with Chaosium in the past, so getting more Stormbringer/Hawkmoon action could be wishful thinking. If Mike's issues stem from Charlie Krank's stewardship of Chaosium then he might feel a bit happier about working with them in the future now that Krank and family are no longer in the picture, but at the same time it sounds like he's happy with Mongoose's custodianship of the licence and so there doesn't seem to be a good reason for him to change.

In a world where Stafford and Petersen can return to Chaosium, I suppose anything is possible, but I would be even more flabbergasted if Moorcock ever agrees to work with Chaosium again, no matter whose name is on the masthead.

Moorcock's license with Mongoose seems to have ended a while ago, as well.

A French company has published an official licensed RPG called Mournblade, but I am not sure who owns the English-language rights, if anyone.

Quote from: Warthur;836073As far as other games go, Chaosium probably need to start exploring other genres. Fantasy is ably covered by RQ/Magic World/core BRP and supplements, and Call of Cthulhu serves horror and investigative games so well that any variants on those themes would be best served as being supplements to the respective game lines. I imagine that an attempt at a Superworld revival could manifest at some point, particularly if Chaosium happen to land any suitable licences ("Teen Titans, powered by the Superworld system!"), and it's well past time we had a definitive BRP-based sci-fi game. (There was Ringworld, but I understand that that game had issues here and there with its system.)

Honestly, I hope they focus on stability for a while before branching out into genres that haven't done historically well for them. They've got a lot of work ahead of them, and three core game lines (CoC, BRP, and MW) should be enough to keep them busy for the near future.

I'd hoped for a MW push when I heard Mr. Monroe was hired on.
Over on BRP Central someone floated the idea of a BRP Companion to accompany the BGB and that's another item I'll light a candle for.

Matt

Or we could just wait and see what they do.

Hypothetically, what would you want to see in a book like that?
