This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Advanced Quick20: Anybody Playing It?

Okay, so I recently bought a copy of this from Lulu (as a designer of rule-light d20 variants, I make it a point to check up on what others are doing in the same vein) and am very impressed. Or at least impressed enough to consider contacting the author about a 'd20 Light' system anthology that I'm thinking of compiling for release via Lulu. So. . .

Is anybody here (or elsewhere) playing games using Advanced Quick20? if so, what do you consider its strong points? Its weak points? What are you (or others) using it for? What genres does it seem to handle best? How compatible do you feel it is with standard d20 System (or OGL) products? Would you recommend it to a friend?

Is there a free copy of the rules available anywhere online?

There seem to be quite a lot of streamlined or cut-down versions of d20 going around.  Makes me wonder if the A/D&D distinction is still worth considering.  Personally, I would definitely consider returning to D&D if it was simpler and lighter.  There might be others of the same view.

I don't know. I bought a softcover online at Lulu for $14. The 'Advanced' is an allusion to the fact that the book is basically a compilation of the best rules from the Quick20 line (formerly available as a series of inexpensive PDFs from RPGNow). I think I'll still stick to Simple20 for skill-centric OGL play, though I'm giving some thought to using Advanced Quick20 as a diversion from D&D 3.5 in the near future.

Nah, it's not free. There are some amazing free systems out there already like Simple20, Microlite20, etc. I may release some of the original Quick20 rules in an SRD at some point, but right now I have way too much work on my plate.

I wrote Quick20 because I'm not really wedded to the hard templating at the heart of D20 because I enjoy improvising. You *won't* like it is template interaction or hardcore stratey are what you want. You *will* like it if you want to be able to choose your own bonus descriptors, make your own character classes without fretting or run a cross-enre game without really detailed resolution.

The original Quick20 is around 3 bucks in PDF, at:

It's very much oriented toward fantasy gaming, though there are bundles for other genres and styles.

Advanced Quick20's is the "state of the art" vis a vis the Quick20 games I run. There are a bunch of little differences from the system that have come up over play. Weapons are a bit tougher, for instance, because I thought original Quick20 combat was a bit indecisive. Magic is cheaper to use, and a bit more detailed. It's a generic system. A lot of the rules are culled from original supplements as the game evolved.

I have someone contracted to write an original setting for the game. I'm *also* looking to add superpowers rules, but I'm honestly not thrilled about designing that sort of thing. I'd be happy to either contract or promote somebody else's work along those lines.
