This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: Mostlyjoe;884030Well, while the setting is indeed dark it is heavily implied that the PCs can do something about that. And more importantly, there are in game mechanics on how to fix things. I find that refreshing!

I like the sound of that and that the mechanics seem to live up to the fluff. PCs and their peers ARE powerful. Not just massively overhyped, maybe powerful in a broken way if you stumble across the right build.

Quote from: CRKrueger;884053You mean a White Wolf game would give Game Designers and Story Writers precedence and give you a shitshow you can't effect really even though you're a God, while an OSR game would let you run a setting where PC Gods can actually do something besides destroy the world further...do tell. :hmm:

I think he is saying that Exalted 1e and Godbound are the same in this regard.  It was one of things that appealed to me about Godbound as well.

I understand where you're coming from ... I've had no interest whatsoever in the genre (I took a brief look at Exalted 1E way back when they were giving the pdf away for free, which is the closest I ever got), but between the author's impressive attitude and the things I was reading about the game, I jumped on the kickstarter.

Having skimmed through the beta, I'm seriously impressed with what Kevin's done.

Got a pledge in and reading the mortal section.  It is very nice.  Now I want to get my hands on the Ulstang necromancers.

Strange feeling, isn't it?

I initially checked this one out purely on the strength of the author's reputation (I have a standing policy of "pledge first, read the description later" on Sine Nomine kickstarters) and just planned to mine it for the GM tools because I generally prefer to run low-powered, gritty, resource-scarce games.  But seeing all the talk about it and a lot of the ideas in the actual text...  It's making me seriously consider going to the opposite end of the spectrum and run a god game.

Now if I could just work out an easy way to swap out the core d20 mechanic for Mythras...

Quote from: CRKrueger;883924A layman's opinion...

Godbound: Dark
Exalted (past 1st): Edgy, oh so very Edgy, and let's throw in Transgressive

I've never ceased to be amazed at how anti-progressive Exalted is (judging by the idiots that praise such things) yet is so praised by the progressive crowd.

Something tells me, they don't play Exalted.

Orphan81

It's not about "playing" Exalted man, it's about coming up with the most progressive flavor of the month character idea and talking about how awesome it is.
1. Some of you culture warriors are so committed to the bit you'll throw out any nuance or common sense in fear it's 'giving in' to the other side.

2. I'm a married homeowner with a career and a child. I won life. You can't insult me.

3. I work in a Prison, your tough guy act is boring.

It's not the concept, but the prior implementation that is the issue. Kevin's game is just much more approachable.

Download the Godbound draft. See how many pages you get through before pledging... :)

Yes the 1.0 beta is free for you to get.  The link is at least the first post of this thread.

Hell, I don't think he'd care if you looked at the 1.1 version of the rules. 1.2 is about to show up anyrate.

So my first actual play session went swimmingly? Yes, I'd say swimmingly.

The group is a Bright Republic Pirate, a Vissioni exiled merchant prince, and a dark knight from Ancalia. Goodluck, a the first port of call to he Bleak Reach gets attacked by marauders of the Snake Skin Banner, a new cult in the area, and the group gets caught in the cross hairs. (Nothing like a good fight to start the game eh?)

Long story short the fight was damn interesting because of how Word gifts interacted. Alacrity allowed the Pirate to seemingly teleport around the battlefield at will. The merchant prince used Command to turn one of the greater foes to their side in battle! Later he used it again to stop a lone survivor of the last mob to stop, turn around (was running away), and tell them who sent them and why. Endurance and Sword allowed the dark knight of the group to stand there like a damn wall taking hits with out caring much hammering on whole mobs who kept doing overwhelm attacks on him round after around. (He kept making his Hardiness save most the time.)

Having the damage conversion table in front of me helped a lot. I'm going to build a rough GM's screen of tables and stuff to speed up later combats. Having saves and attribute check numbers written out ahead of time helps.

The group aided the defense of the town impressing one of the local guild leaders and they were invited to the Goodluck Defense Pact meeting the following day to go over what happened and how to prevent future attacks.

I'm loving it so far.

As a matter of fact,

Quote from: Godbound Backer Update #1Feel free to share the link with others at your gaming table or those who have some interest in Godbound. While you could just share the file itself, sharing the folder link ensures that they can get the freebie file updates and Sixteen Sorrows teasers I'll be releasing over the next month.

And why don't I just stick this link on the campaign's front page? Experimental data. I'm seeing how well this method works to get things passed around. Anonymity is the worst enemy of a small publisher like me, so it's worth some experimentation on best methods for encouraging people to share and read the file.

And in other places Kevin has reiterated that he's perfectly fine with people sharing the link to the Beta Folder freely. He's made it a backer update to see how it spreads when his fans are sharing it instead of him. Experimental data, like he says.

To that end, for science:

Enjoy.

Love it! It's pretty much D&D murderhobos with superpowers, just like Exalted was supposed to be. ;)

Seriously, though. If anyone else's got play reports, I'm listening.

I'm running this, BTW. Still considering whether to set it in Nezdohva (robo-Russia!), Rakti (black magic Hungary!) or the Oasis States (Egypt plus the slave-owning city-states from ASoIaF!).

Mostlyjoe

I'm running the Bleak Reaches like the Silent World from Stay Silent, Stay Still Webcomic meets Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth.

Search through Snowman's posts. He's got a blog where he's been posting sessions for a while.
