Title: Goblinoid Games shutting down?
Post by: blackstone on September 14, 2022, 07:24:53 AM
Came across this post when looking into getting the Advanced Labyrinth Lord rules:

News - Goblinoid Games Starts to Shut Down - Suspends Social Media Presence

Goblinoid Games and Labyrinth Lord have been a part of the OSR from the very beginning, and I'd hate to see it just disappear.
They still have their store at drivethrurpg.com up, so I did buy the print copy of the rules.
Does anyone have any additional info on the situation?

I dont have any information but this is shocking.  I downloaded Labyrinth Lord recently as a possible replacement to D&D 5e.  Very sad

I heard about this. It's a pity.

This saddens me. During my exodus from 5E, I looked to the OSR for alternatives, and Labrynth Lord was one of them. While me and my group eventually settled on Swords and Wizardry (which is hands-down my favorite rules set) I still had fun with Labyrinth Lord, and fell in love with the Pacesetter system through Rotworld and Cryptoworld (I still run one shots of both for Halloween). Not to mention they have the best Gamma World clone, Mutant Future, which I still play.
Farewell, Goblinoid, you will be missed.

Hate to see it.  I was looking at Labyrinth Lord as well.  Too late to help them, apparently.

The books are timeless (being a retroclone). You will probably never run out of matereal to supplement this game.

Honestly they have had a slow release schedule for years now. They'll be well-remembered for both Labyrinth Lord and the Pacesetter reboots. It's the latter that I really liked, especially Cryptworld.

And, of course, the Goblinoid Games home page now says they're releasing Labyrinth Lord 2E in Q1 of 2023, so they're probably not done yet.

Yes. The message from the original post about shutting down was from July 2022. Around that time, their website was closed down.

Then in September 2022 they put up the announcement of 2nd edition. This from the Wayback Machine on their site.

Yep; they're back and releasing a new edition and thankfully not using Kickstarter: https://goblinoidgames.com/

I'll be interested to see what it looks like and what the reception is.  As we've discussed around here, OSE has seemingly lapped the field in retroclones while adding new twists with their Advanced rules.  It sounds like Dan's main goal is to ramp up production values and improve the organization.  I wonder if he'll add Unearthed Arcana material to the new Advanced book?

Because I'm a sucker for one volume complete games I may pick up the Advanced version when it appears if it's a substantial upgrade to what I already have.

I was going to say, the last time I heard from them they were saying they got a whole new project in the cooker and were getting ready to get back into the swing of things. Would have been an astonishing turnaround if the next announcement was "we're going away."

Oh horray... OSR edition treadmilling to milk the fans of a few more bucks.

Since LL was one of the earliest of the retroclones on the market, and the author wasn't sure how close he could get to the original work, without facing possible litigation from WOTC; I can easily give him a pass if he wants to update LL to be closer to the original work.  OSE has gotten closer, without WOTC jumping in; so I'm sure the author of LL feels the door is already wide open now.

I could see that as a case. I was really turned off of LL by just how much they stole, yes stole, practically whole cloth from the older works. Stuff that sure as hell was not covered by the 3e SRD. And set the stage for a-lot of outright OSR game theft for years to come.

We'll see how it goes.
