This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Blah blah D&D blah blah blah... we know. It's big news.  But c'mon... :D

Did anyone here participate in the WH40K Dark Heresy demos?

If yes, then spill the beans already!

I can't wait for GenConUK to come and go before they release the demo booklet.  I need to know... now.  Please? Pretty please?! with sugar on top and all that shit?!?!

Oh forget it, go back to your regularly scheduled 4e discussions.

A demo booklet will be available at GenCon UK?

Interesting. If I decide to go then I'll definitely pick up a copy.

One Horse Town

Apparently it's a 17 page booklet that details a little adventure and the rudiments of the system. Other than that, i got nothin'

Well, just in case anyone is paying attention:

demo booklet

But not until after GenConUK.

My hubby ran one Sunday morning, and is promising to run it for my family and some of our friends sometime soon.  Should I ask him to come over and shed some light?

Is a bear catholic?  Does a pope shit in the woods?  If a tree falls in the forrest, and no is arround, does it simply pick itself back up and dust itself off and fall back into line with the rest of the trees?

YES!

Please. :D

I was there.

It was well run -- a mystery game, essentially.  The system was the WFRP system.  There was very little fluff in the demo booklet -- mostly an adventure.

Overall, I'm looking forward to the game.  But the demo itself and the booklets that went along with it didn't make me salivate like I thought they might.
My rules and comments about good GMing:
  • Improvise as much as you can
  • A character sheet is a list of items that tell you what the story should be about
  • As a GM, say "maybe" and ask your players to justify a "yes"
  • Immersion isn\'t a dirty word.
  • Collectively, players are smarter than you and will think of things you never considered.

Looking forward to playing it.  I ran the WFRP2e download by myself the other day (walk to draksomething?) and was pleasantly surprised by how quick and easy it was.  Reading the rules, I was worried it would be too simple, but it played just fine.  Will hopefully be running it tonight with what's left of my group following the ravages of the flu.
We've always been more 40k boys, though.  Bring on the guns!

I ran one of the two sample modules at GenCon (Illumination). It was awesome. The only downside is that the module they sent us would have run WAY better in a six hour time slot instead of a 3 hour slot.

They gave us a full copy of the book (pre-layout) minus the background chapters (which is, I'm guessing, what is holding up the release of the final book - having the GW team go over the background and setting and make sure it is all kosher). The system is, at heart, the WHFRP system with some changes. Character advancement is different (but I can't go into how different because of my NDA - character advancement wasn't part of the demo so it isn't common knowledge yet) and at first I wasn't all that happy with the advancement system when I first read it, but I like it now. The biggest change to the core system is the Attack statistic is missing (replaced with a talent that gives you extra attacks), and they have added rules for semi-automatic and fully automatic weapon fire.

Illumination had a number of wicked fights in it, and the end result was a gory mess.

The setting of the first book is really that the characters are simpering lackeys in a world where basically EVERYONE is a simpering lackey, but where you have the right as the lackey of a real bad-ass to occasionally reach out and SMITE someone.

If you had played many WHFRP adventures in the past, you would have guessed the ending of Illumination without fail ... "ah, this is the scene where either our friend and ally or the big bad evil guy starts summoning a demon and we have to stop it, huh?" - In case anyone will be playing the adventure proper I won't give away whether it is the BBEG or the Ally that is doing the summoning though.

The adventure was very good and helped set the mood well. The only downside is that a lot of it was in the outdoors instead of dealing with people in the imperial society which would have REALLY been a good intro to the setting.

Oh yeah, for the record, where an autogun does 1d10+3 damage... a bolter does 3d10+3 damage. That's some big-time pain.

Joy after unending joy.
Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet.

Oh puhleeze.  I've read your recent CoC rants.  WHFRP and, I'm assuming by extension, WH40kDH are not that bad. :p

As simpering lackeys of the Inquisition, the characters generally outrank just about everyone they meet in the setting except some of the higher ranked members of the Eclesiarchy.

There's also a lot of Dune buried in the Rogue Trader universe, something I'm also a huge fan of.

Overall, this is a game I am very excited to have a full copy of in hand in February.

QuoteGrandfather, tell my a story!
Alright, go and get your storybook.
No, no, not one of those, a real story!
A real story?
Yes, tell me about when you were a boy.
Well, then, I shall have to take you back with me,
A long way in time...

It was my thirteenth year on a cold winters
Day, as I walked through the enchanted
Forest, I heard the sound of horses, and men
At arms, I felt compelled to walk on and
Find the place of these sounds, and when
The forest did clear I was standing on a
Hill before me the armies of the worlds
Standing, waiting. I thought to myself, for
Whom or for what are they waiting?
Suddenly a gust of wind came up from the
North, there appeared a lone rider, holding
A sword of steel, then from the south came
Another, bearing a battle ax, from the east
Came a third holding a spiked club, and
Finally from the west, a rider who weilded
A great hammer of war. with them came
Their soldiers of death, followed by an
Army of immortals. they were few in number
But the look in their eyes told all who
Beheld them that they would leave this day
Only in victory or death. and there was a
Great silence...
My heart began to pound, storm clouds
Filled the sky with darkness, rain came, and
The four winds blew with such anger that i
Held fast to a tree. I watched the four
Riders raise their weapons into the air.
Without warning, screaming their war cry
They led the attack, down to the battle they
Rode, they met the armies of the world with
A mighty clash! I could feel the ground
Shake, the earth drank much blood that
Day. each of the four, was unto himself,a
Whirlwind of doom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When the smoke did clear, many thousands
Were dead. there was much blood and gore.
Their bodies lay broken and scattered
Across the battlefield like brown leaves
Blown by the wind. and I saw the four ride
Together to the top of the hill, while below
Them the soldiers of death assembled, all
Those who would now swear allegiance
To them.

And the four spoke the words of the
Warriors prayer.

Gods of war I call you, my sword
Is by my side.
I seek a life of honor, free from
All false pride.
I will crack the whip with a bold
Mighty hail.
Cover me with death if I should
Ever fail.
Glory, majesty, unity
Hail, hail, hail.

And as I stood and looked on, I heard the
Armies of the world hail them without
End, and their voices of victory carried
Long and far throughout the land!

Well, thats it, did you like the story?
Yeah, it was great!
Oh good, Im glad. now off to bed with you.
Grandfather?
Yes?
Who were those four men?
Who were they?
They were the metal kings!!!!!!!!!!!!

THAT is Warhammer. Metal Kings simper to no man.
