This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Gen Con 2008: What Would It Take For You To Go?

I would need GenCon to pay for my hotel room.

Fortunately, they do that already.

Quote from: NYTFLYRIm 99% sure we are going, it just depends on a couple of things, like still being employeed, and which of our friends are going.

Im thinking about running a few games myself... not sure on that one yet

It would be great to finally sit down and maybe play a game of CyberPunk together or something.

:D Well, I should be going for next year unless something happens between now and then.

Didn't go this year because we had way too much to do to get ready for the baby, plus money was a little tight with our remodeling budget.

Should be good to go next year though.

Quote from: Zachary The FirstSo, in the interests of getting as many friends, co-posters, hell, even relative strangers from this site as I can to Gen Con Indy next year, I want to post a survey to see what folks' needs were, what would entice them to going to Gen Con, and if we could possibly look at doing something as a site to try to make the trip as easy for folks as possible.

Funny you mention that. I've never been to Gen Con and one of my good friends who is in the same situation would like to make the trip.

Going to Gen Con for me is conditional to hanging out with great people. One of only way to garantee that is to go there with friends.

What else could entice me? Anything that will facilitate meeting nice, honest people. I don't care what games they play, I don't care if they dislike my games or if I dislike theirs.

And lastly, it wouldn't hurt if some none-geek activities were planned as well. I understand that it's a gaming convention but I'd like some side-dishes with that.

Two days off from work. Considering I work within walking distance of the ICC, I'd just need about three gallons of gas for the weekend.

Oh, and a bunch of money to buy beers at the Ram.

My sister and I would have gone this year but events transpired to alter those plans.  We're shooting for daytripping Saturday next year.

Place to crash and transportation there and back. Or train fare in the last case.

No, I won't fly. Generalized anxiety disorder and airport security are not a good combination.

Airport security pisses me off - not the delays, but the intentional obtrusiveness. I'm in the industry, and the company I worked for had - before 9/11 - developed backscatter X-ray machines that could safely and unobtrusively find hidden weapons in luggage or on someone's person - the same technology that looks into luggage. This business of confiscating fingernail clippers and ridiculously intrusive searches is designed to calm passenger fears, lulling them with a sense of false security, not find weapons. After all, do they make you take off your belts? Confiscate ball-point pens? Remove your shoelaces? All these and more are potential deadly weapons. I refuse to submit to indignities for no reason... as if the terrorists were going to do the whole thing over again anyway! Makes my blood boil. Therefore I stay away from airports.

The plane ticket costs alone are enough to keep away me from GenCon. Even if I had the money, I'd rather spend it on getting to national conventions, or doing even something more sane with it ;)

The plane fairs to and from the UK make it prohibitively expensive.  The only possible justification for them would be a family holiday.  Offset against that is the fact that a) my wife would never go for a family holiday involving a 4 day con and b) my wife would never go for a family holiday in the US, period.  So either I win the lottery or GenCon Indy is out for me permanently.

I'm unlikely to get to GenCon next year, but I'm hoping to get to some local conventions.

I went back in 2001 (actually rented a car and drove to Milwaukee from Dallas with a friend). Had a blast, and have toyed with the idea of going back off and on ever since. Cost would be the deciding factor (travel/rooms) though hopefully it won't be as big an issue by the next time it rolls around.

Then there's the "I'm a semi-conscious, grumpy marsupial." angle to deal with.

If I push myself to get a printed product (rather than a PDF), I would go.  That way, I could defray some of my expenses and do some promotion at the same time.  I had to decline going this year due to life issues.  Hopefully, in 2008, I can go for a day or three.

I'm going!  I was promised!

Then again, last night I realized that there's this big extended-family vacation planned for next summer that's going to eat some vacation days at work. I have a feeling my DC just went up.  By next year, Ill need a crit...

Dammit.  I was promised! I've got cheap fare (1/2 tank of gas) and free lodging.  Hell, with the swag I'll get from Bill and Clash - I'll come out ahead! ;)

How much more cost effective do I have to get?

James - just do what some friends of mine did.

 Married couple, 1 kid .

They went to Indy for all  4 days - during the day time the husband got to wander around GenCon, shop for games play demos....the wife visited her relatives, went to museums and tourist spots with their kid. At dinner each night they would meet back up for a meal as a family . He had fun, she had fun. They worked it all out ahead of time.
