So, "Legends" by Dark City Games (who seem to be the people running thefantasytrip.com?) has been sitting on my computer for a while... how much stripped down is it compared to the original? So much that one should try getting hold of TFT itself... for like 50 bucks on ebay?

If so, which version? Melee/Wizard, Advanced Melee/Wizard (or is that actually TFT?)?

My understanding is that TFT proper is combination of Advanced Melee (the combat system), Advanced Wizard (the magic system), and In The Labyrinth (the campaign rules).  I think that you could get by using the earlier Melee and Wizard rules, though.

Elliot and James:  Thanks for the advice on the Microquests!  I'll try to track down some of the ones you recommended.  I have never really been a fan of the solitaire adventure format, but I am sure I can mine them for gaming gold.  :D

To get the full-blown version, you need at least

Advanced Melee
Advanced Wizard
In the Labyrinth

However, the two "advanceds" may be a little hard to understand without knowing Melee & Wizard. But I'll bet Legends can cover that ground if necessary.

Also, the value-added of the two "advanceds" is less than ITL, which has the skill & campaign rules, plus a number of additional creatures. Of the two "advanceds", Advanced Wizard is probably more needful due to the expanded spell lists and rules for enchantment.

Dragons of Underearth is an abridged version of the whole shebang, basically including slimmed-down skills, spells, monsters, and combat, but not so much the stuff that you'd need outside the adventure/labyrinth. Which means it could probably be used like Legends, as a substitute for the original two microgames.

Quote from: The Good AssyrianDark City Games[/URL] has some neat TFT stuff.  Looks like they even have a sci-fi version of their new version of TFT which they are calling "Legends: Time & Space".  And it looks like they are writing new adventures in the 'Microquest" format of the original TFT stuff.  I've never seen any of the original Microquests.  Are they any good?

It was (and still is) a wonderful little system.  I hope Dark City puts out something beefier, closer to the AM/AW/ITL trio, at some point.

There are websites out there with nice PDFs of all of the rules (microgame and advanced versions both) and most of the microquests, btb. I won't put up links but even if you didn't pay an IQ point for google-fu a 3d6 roll under ought to find it for you.

There is also a slightly house-ruled version (better organized that the real deal, IMHO) used by a guy to run "The World of Etan" campaign. I think that you can still find this online.

Thanks for the tip.  I think I've seen those somewhere before...

Thanks, Dr. R!  Something that Elliot said earlier triggered an idea (dangerous, I know...).  One of the reasons that I was looking at TFT in the first place was as a beginning RPG to run for my 10 year old step-daughter.  She likes to play boardgames with me, so this is the next step in my cunning plan to convert her, her sister and my wife into gamers! Mwuahaha! :D

I think that I might try to get my hands on one of the solitaire microgames and run it for her.  If she likes it I will try to get everyone to try it and do a more traditional campaign using TFT.

I'm afraid I'll stick to GURPS.  TFT isn't even that much simpler at the most basic level.

I've been looking at somthing called "TFT Private Edition" (I believe it's the "World of Etan" stuff that jdrakeh mentioned), and it seems...needlessly complex.  Simple in concept, but pretty wonky in the execution.
