Anyone ever use an online resource to hook up with a gaming group? If so, care to recommend any? I've tried, but my Google-Fu is weak, and if I'm going to try out some 4e in anything but an RPGA event, I'll need to find a group, as I'm fairly certain my own won't go for 4e. And hell, it never hurts to try some new faces I'm sure. For that matter, anyone in the DFW area have an extra seat at the table? I don't bite, much.
Barring that, anyone experienced up for running a "demonstration" 4e PBP? Seems the best way to bust some misconceptions (or prove them) might be to throw some dice on the subject.
Nearby Gamers seems like it would work.
The only one I have had actual long-term success using has been meetup.com (made contacts at a meetup group) and a local forum site called cvgamers.com.
Nearby Gamers worked for me, though it took a year or so before I made any contact that actually bore fruit. Other online registries . . . didn't. I don't even remember all of them I signed up for, but I've been a member of a few for years w/o so much as a nibble.
Considering most of the stuff you find in the ol'www (rule 34 anyone?), be extra careful of not ending with a bunch of the wrong "roleplayers" :p.
Three out of the four people I game with on Fridays are people I contacted on nearbygamers.com
Try it out!
I found my club (London D&D Meetup) via meetup.com
I hadn't tried "Nearby Gamers," but Pen and Paper Games has worked fairly well for me:
//www.penandpapergames.com
Meetup.com is also useful

Hey now, I'm not afraid of LARPs... ;)
I did get on Pen and Paper last night and I have to say its REALLY good for what I was looking for. Lots of PbP and Chat-room stuff. Also, the Dallas area seems almost over-represented there, which is great. Already found an RPGA event (I know, I know) next weekend I'm going to go try out again, and I'm certain I'll be able to find some face-to-face gaming there as well. I have to say, meetup.com was a gold-mine too, mostly in other areas of interest.
Thanks for all the feedback!
Meetup.com seemed ok, but the only RPG-related meetup near me was D&D-specific. Which sucks for me, since I really don't like D&D.
Remember Werekoala, you can always make contacts at RPGA events and then recruit some people that you feel you can save from the gibbering madness. :D
I've been thinking for awhile that having at least a forum for meeting folks here on this site would be cool, but I don't know if that'd be too much of a pain in the booty. I do know my old DM uses meetup and he rocks. I'm signed up with P&P but so far nothing... I'm now in a very rural area so I'm not really surprised by that. In the meantime, the Castle Amber OSRIC game Stormbringer is running here is getting me through :) Shoutout to Drohem, Narf, and Venosha, my fellow victims... er... adventurers in the enigmatic Castle :) Hope some more folks will join us before it's too late ;)
