Title: Games You Wish You Had
Post by: Zalmoxis on May 08, 2006, 04:35:58 PM
Most people have a few games they wish they had in their collection, but don't for various reasons. Three that come to my mind are all from Green Ronin; Testament, Trojan War and Damnation Decade. Anyone play these or see them in action? All three seem pretty darned cool to me, especially the first one and the last one.

I've not played any of those, hardly even heard of them.

Three games I want are Over the Edge, Dogs in the Vineyard and Primetime Adventures. Edit: Add Unknown Armies to the mix. Looks way kewl.

Dogs and PTA I guess I'll order eventually. I've been on the hunt for a copy of Over the Edge for a while now. Not easy to find, unfortunately.

I have Testament and Trojan War, but haven't had the chance to play them. Testament looks great, though, and really is different from just about any RPG I've seen. They really made an effort to evoke the mood of the setting.

The game I'd like to have is Ringworld from Chaosium. I like Larry Niven's Ringworld books, as well as his Known Space setting in general. The game I've heard is a really good adaptation, and has a lot of cool reference material that would be of interest to non-gamers. Over the past 20+ years I've tried to track it down, but the only times I've ever seen it for sale is on eBay, and it always goes for way more than I'm willing to bid.

I wish I had the original Paranoia books. I found scanned copies, but they're not the same...

I wish I had Superworld from Chaosium.

I had the Superworld mini-game that came with Worlds of Wonder and we had a ton of fun with it. I always wondered what the "Full version" was like.

'Bout a third of the way down, on the right.

I wish I had Cutthroat Roleplaying, from Stormworld Games.

The entire Dragon Warriors series.  I have books 1-4, and am constantly looking for a good deal on the last two.  They show up on ebay every now and then, but always go up way high.  One of these days I'll sneak under the radar and get them for around $10-15.

(and yes, I know they are free on the underdogs website, I have those but I want the actual books too)

Testament, Trojan War, M&M 2.0 - I meant to pick them up and never got around to it.  I missed out on original Paranoia and original Gamma World - I didn't buy much as a kid due to low funds.  The Dune rpg, just to see what all the fuss is about.

Two old GDW games that I played and loved but never owned: Fifth Frontier War and Invasion: Earth.

RuneQuest 1st and/or 2nd edition, The Fantasy Trip, and Adventures in Fantasy

In the 80's, I always wanted to checkout OD&D/AD&D's competitors, but never did.

Have you seen Legends of the Ancient World (http://www.darkcitygames.com/)?  It's basically a cleaned-up streamlined version of TFT from a company called Dark City Games, and the basic rules are available as a free download on their website.

I'm running a game using just the basic rules over at rpgnet and having a blast.  The full version of the rules, called The Book of Heroes, will be out later this year.

Thanks!  I'll have a look.

I bought the game and the Ringworld Companion when they came out. It's an excellent game - if you can get it, do. I just picked up my last "Need to get" game - Privateers and Gentlemen from FGU. It's lovely!

I wish I had the Dune RPG, Advanced Melee (TFT), En Garde!, Metamorphosis Alpha, Lords of Creation, Starfaring, FTL: 2448, Fringeworthy, and Spawn of Fashan (original).

Quote from: John MorrowSpawn of Fashan (original).

This seems to imply you know of the "Kulp" edition. For those who don't know, some years back Piratecat at EN World somehow found out how to get in touch with the guy who wrote Spawn of Fashan, and had him print up a batch of the game for those who expressed an interest in an EN World thread. It was named the "Kulp" edition after PC's real name. The guy added a sheet where he explained the history of the game.

It was kinda sad, actually, because the guy and his friends really made an effort to get the thing written and printed up, and went to GenCon with it - and then got lambasted in a still-legendary Dragon review (that's why we still knew what it was, after all). After that, the guy lost interest in gaming in general, but seemed genuinely pleased that people were still talking about Spawn. He seemed well aware of its quality, as it was obviously done by him when he was young, with a lot more enthusiasm than game designing experience. I bought a copy of the "Kulp" edition, which I have in storage. It really was pretty bad, but is a helluva nice bit of gaming infamy. Hell, it's at least more good natured than some of the more recent examples of bad game design.

I would like to have an original SPI copy of Dragonquest. I had it "back in the day", and my earliest attempts at GMing were with it and my brother. I'd love to have a decent copy for old times sake.

I wish I had the Midnight campaign setting. I've heard great things, and it sounds like a setting I'd really like.

Hmm.  Mostly older, out of print things.  Like the original Top Secret rules -- I read articles about it in Dragon, but never got it.  I got Top Secret SI, but it was an entirely different game.  Actually, I wish I had kept that one, 'cause I never gave it a chance.  I don't even know if the rules were any good or not.  :)

I wish I had gotten the entire run of Traveller:2300/2300 AD.  I got the highlights, but I wish I had filled in the rest.
