This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

There are three names for me. The first being Luke Crane, the second Gret Stolze and then there is Evil Hat. Anything done by these has never disappointed me and gets bought sight unseen as soon as it comes out... or when I have some money.

Quote from: ggroy;422877After buying "Cyborg Commando" back in the day, that's when I never bought anything again based solely on somebody's name.

I got a copy of that for free and still paid too much for it.

Quote from: ColonelHardisson;422875Now that I'm thinking of authors who are no longer with us, I'll mention that one of the first ones besides Gygax whose name could get me to buy a game book was Nigel Findley.

That man died way too young. He wrote some great stuff for Shadowrun, and I'm not even the world's greatest fan for that genre.

I dunno. There are names that will make me sit up and check something out, but not so much "buy sight unseen."

Monte Cook and Mike Mearls use to be go-to names for me in the D20 arena, but I never did pick up Monte Cook's World of Darkness (sort of out of my area of interest) and never did pick up 4e (but that may be a special case, and I sort see that as Heinisoo's baby, not Mearls'.

When Mongoose was churning out lots of D20 books, I found navigating by looking for Mearls or Gareth Hanrahan a reliable way of filtering out the crap. But again, not a guarantee I'd pick it up, just a first stage in the vetting process.
The Secret Volcano Base: my intermittently updated RPG blog.

Running: Pathfinder Scarred Lands, Mutants & Masterminds, Masks, Starfinder, Bulldogs!
Playing: Sigh. Nothing.
Planning: Some Cyberpunk thing, system TBD.

I agree that Nigel Findley was talented. Dave Hargrave was a strange genius.
Greg Stolze is great when he's working with other guys I like--John Tynes or Dennis Detwiller. Some of his other collaborators, not so much.

I like Ray Winninger. If Mike Stackpole wrote another game, I'd check it out. Richard Tchulka's good.
Employment Counselor: So what do you like to do outside of work?
Oblivious Gamer: I like to play games: wargames, role-playing games.
EC: My cousin killed himself because of role-playing games.
OG: Jesus, what was he playing? Rifts?

Jonathan Tweet, most definitely. Robin Laws is almost there too.

Luke Crane, as long as I'm interested in the particular game's subject. I've never been disappointed.

Like Ghul, I'll pick up any adventure with Gabor Lux's name on it.

The only one I can think of is Monte Cook. He just hasn't ever let me down.

I remember when he passed away. I loved his stuff at the time. The guide to werebeasts was incredible.

Author's name doesn't influence me saying "must buy", though it will keep me away from some products. Game line is the most important factor nowadays, especially since I stopped buying current D&D. I used to be a huge Nigel Findley fan when he was writing for Shadowrun, because he was exceptionally good.

My favorite has to be Curse of the Witch Head.

Another excellent one was Chasm of the Damned.

I have read Ice Tower of the Salka cover to cover, but I have not run it yet, because it is a bit too high level for the present group, but I may modify it to run it soon, because it is too good to wait for.
