This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Games You Didn't Want To Like, But Did

RPGPundit

A mirror thread to the whole "games you wanted to like but couldn't" thread; are there games that your first reaction toward was negative, but you ended up enjoying it in spite of yourself?

Soylent Green

New! Cyberblues City - like cyberpunk, only more mellow. Free, fully illustrated roleplaying game based on the Fudge system

Good question.

I didn't want or expect to like Teenagers from Outer Space because I think it is stupid as fuck and I normally hate any kind of comedic mini-game like Kobalts Ate my Baby. The GM I had at the time had such a love for silly anime and had enough charisma to sell the whole idea.

I'm not sure I'd like TFOS run by anyone else, just like I've stayed away from BESM for the same reason, but at the time it was just about the most fun game I knew.

Ian Warner

I think all my games are going to end up in this catagory for some people :)

Initially, I was taken aback by some of the changes in D&D 3e. Now I consider most of those changes essential and had a great gaming experience with the game.

Playing: Sigh. Nothing.
Planning: Some Cyberpunk thing, system TBD.

Not really any for me. If I have a bad first reaction to a game, I won't buy it.

Yeah, this was me too. I was a real hard sell on 3.x but now I love it.
"Meh."

The Butcher

I wouldn't say "I didn't want to like", but I certainly didn't expect to like Savage Worlds as much as I do. And I'm talking about the original edition, annoying writing and all.

Same here for a number of years, until I burned out on 3.5E/d20.

Malleus Arianorum

I overcame a lousy first impression to a botched sales pitch for Amber.

"Do you hate dice? Have you ever wanted to roleplay but without dice? Well now you can with Amber diceless RPG! The RPG that has NO DICE!"
That\'s pretty much how post modernism works. Keep dismissing details until there is nothing left, and then declare that it meant nothing all along. --John Morrow

Closest I come is AD&D 4E... I went into it with open hostility and came out of it with, 'meh'. I wouldn't cross the street to play it, but I wouldn't set fire to it either.

I guess that I was suspicious of MRQII, given the shoddy job that Mongoose did with their first attempt at RuneQuest.

I knew that Lawrence Whitaker was in charge of writing MRQII (later joined by Pete Nash), so that was reason for optimism, but I expected Mongoose to ruin it nonetheless.

Now I think that MRQII is the best FRPG of the past twenty years (despite being produced by Mongoose).
