This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Faery's Tale is awesome

I just got this game, and I really like it.

My kid and I got into making characters and playing out a few simple scenes. We didn't actually play a whole game, we sort of just ran through some stuff as we were making the character and coming up with details.

Here's some of the cool points:

You can be a good fey or a dark fey. That's what originally sold me on this game. I love the idea of dark fey.

All fey are tiny little critters. Thats such a cool detail! You can have these adventures just based on the idea that your guy is like 6 inches tall.

Ok, good fey are like Pixies (can fly, and have pixie dust which they use for minor magic), Brownies, Sprites, and Pookas.

Dark fey are like goblins, and so on.

There's a very loose setting (which amounts to the same sort of un-setting you have for standard D&D). It's called Brightwood Forest or something. No details, really other than some context for it being a fey place. Just very simple. So you could make it really detailed, or just have it as this undefined place where giants and witches and so on live.

The system uses dice pools which normally I can't stand. But these seem ok. One interesting thing is- for good fey, your 'automatic success' is the 6. For dark fey, it's a 1.

You use magic based on the same stat as your 'hit points' kind of. Essence. Like you can expend a point of essence to do certain magical things. When you run out of essence, you dont die, you just fall asleep and regenerate.

Sounds interesting.  I like dice-pool systems when the designers have been smart enough to keep the number of dice needed to roll under 10 (I'm glaring at you, Exalted).

Who makes this game and where can we take a gander?

I saw it @ Gencon but didn't endup getting it, though it was very tempting. maybe I will have to add it to my buy list.

Oh, the other cool thing is you customize your character with 'gifts', which can be traits like "Brave" or something OR they can be like gear or animal companions.

So my kid's character was named "Toad" and he had a pet wasp that he could ride. In one of the scenes we played out he used his Pixie dust to enchant a twig into a sword.

Anyhow, just thought this was a cool game.

I've been reading it, bit by bit, as well.

Light, simple, fun.  Not what I'd think of as a big, weighty game, not one that will have any great huge impact on my thinking.

Just, a good game.  Simple.

Firefly Games

I'm glad folks are enjoying Faery's Tale. Along with RPG Now, you can try Firefly-Games.com for more information about the game - just go to our Product Support page for an FAQ, previews, and the free intro pack adventure. You also can buy Faery's Tale in our online store - because we are momentarily between printings, we are offering a free PDF copy of the game with each print order. Then we'll ship your book when we receive a restock from the printer in a week or so.

Of course, I'm also happy to answer questions on the forums. :)

It does in fact look very interesting and if I werent in an RPG buying freeze right now I would pick it up.
