This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Dominus Nox

I have the old LS boxed sets and a lot of supplements. I think the LS world is a great setting, very original and with a lot of options, plus it has a very interesting, original alien race in it, the spectrals, who are quite unlike most general SFRPG aliens.

Does anyone know who holds the rights to this world and if they would let some company use it for a generic setting? I know Bary Nakazano was one of the main writers, is he still in gaming anywhere?

Agreed on the first paragraph (loved the Dragoncrests from Dragonstar Rising too, my favorite draconians), no idea on the second.

Last I spoke to Barry, the game world is still being used by his gang and is very protective of it.

Still being used? Where? I haven't heard of any poroducts for LS in over a decade. I'd have loved more info on the spectrals.

Can you put me into contact with him? I would desperately love to get my hands on some of the Pheonix command stuff and ebay is my nemesis! J/k... actually, get him to post here sometimes, he has fans, you know.  Crazy fans who enjoy taking a five second firefight and turning it into an all day gaming session, but fans nonetheless....

Still, I MUST get my hands on replacements for some of my Pheonix command books!

And Living steel was pretty awesome, one of those games/settings that I would loved to have played in but never did. Of course, I thought the presentation was a bit wonky.
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.

Unfortunately, I lost his number in the great drive crash of '04. My impression was that he had a close-knit group of friends playing it and that he no intentions of going beyond that.

Well, it's his Ip and he can pretyt much do what he wants with it, but as a gamer I find it kind of selfish to keep such a wonderful, and published, world to a small group instead of making it available to more gamers.

He may be mad that it didn't sell enought o keep going but those of us who were loyal LEG buyers cvan't help that.

I doubt he's 'holding on to it' for selfish reasons, Nox. The game was released, sold alright for a little while, then lost sales until it was no longer profitable.

What do you think he SHOULD do with it? Rerelease it for a loss?

See about releasing the world setting to a company that uses a game system that is more player friendly to see if the setting could sell, which I think it could.

OK, living steel 101:

In fyt far future, kost of humanity was dominated by an opresive corporate-fuedal regime known as the starguild. A small number of freedom loving peoples found a star system with 7 habitable worlds in it and settled it, living free and at war with the tyranny of the starguild, which was determined to own every human being in the universe.

The 7 worlders met an alien race called the dragoncrests and learned to copy their best weapon system: Powered Armor. For a long time they fought the starguild but were finally overrun. For years, their best warriors had been falling in battle, and were hidden in stasis until the time to revie them came to pass.

Years after the defeat of the 7 words, the starguild imperium was hit by a totally alien race called the spectrals. The spectrals are one of the most unique and bizarre, not to mention original, alien races in SF gaming. They attacked the whole imperium, and notably a 'resort planet" called Rhand. They launched a limited orgbital strike to take out main government offices, then deployed their ultimate weapon, the VISSER virus that caused people to be unable to resist or surpress natural violent urges.

The spectrals feed on sentient life force and care nothing for material goods, land, etc. They are  ahive mind, effectively a single being. Their goal was to cause he total collapse of civillization with as little loss of life as possible, so as to be able to feed without organized resistance.

Well, some 7 worlders were in storage on rhand, and have been awakened to fight for a new future of freedom from the starguild and against the spectrals.

it's a complex world, very original, not a ripoff of anything. Look it up on the net, I've given youthe primer.
