This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Game love/game hate

This post from JimBobOz in the #rpgsite thread made me think:

Quote from: JimBobOzAlready had a good chat with someone today. It was all about the game love, instead of boring old game hate. :)

That's what has been pushing me away from rpgnet, and pulling me here, but it sems that the more people come here, the more the hate quotient grows... Is it inevitable?

No, but I think a lot of it has to do with the relative volume and noise. Its harder to find game love. And on any given topic you'll have people piping in on both sides.

There is also a certian group, who come from another place, who I don't really think love games or gamers--they kinda moved to RPG.net.  (They may not be  the sole people behind it, but I noticed a bit of an increase in game hate responses when that happenned.) NOT that there wasn't some there already.

I know some of the one-true wayism that crops up here bothers me as well--because I don't think there is one true way to game myself.

I on the other hand love both so I'm a freak by some gamers standards.

Even when I disagree with peoples tastes I rarely think the people with those tastes are stupid, idiotic etc.

Give in to your hatred.

With each passing moment you become more my servant.

Probably.

What did Mearls say about the unavoidable negativity of the internet.

In other news, I'm this close >< to adding someone else to my ignore list. Ironic, since this is probably the smallest board I regularly visit, but the ignore list is tied for first. I guess I was enjoying what we had going and hate to see it killed by asswipes, whereas on other boards, negativity has sunk into the background noise for me.

There's a rule about message boards, that once you reach critical mass of users the quality of the discussion is inversely proportional to the number of users.  The more users you get on board the easier it is for some smacktard to derail and troll.  The only way to avoid it is quality, heavy moderation, and most boards make the mistake of either not moderating enough or not doing a good enough job of it.

Right now it's all good, but sooner or later Pundit will either have to get the banhammer out or see the board decline.
I have a theory, it could be witches, some evil witches!

It's the nature of forums.  Love tends to make for short threads.  "I love X",  "Me too" * 7,  "Um, see ya around."

With hate, it triggers defenders, then you get arguments, pages of clarifications about what exactly is hated, long accusations, that can go on for weeks.

"Ah, little lad, you're staring at my fingers. Would you like me to tell you the little story of right-hand/left-hand? The story of good and evil? H-A-T-E! It was with this left hand that old brother Cain struck the blow that laid his brother low. L-O-V-E! You see these fingers, dear hearts? These fingers has veins that run straight to the soul of man. The right hand, friends, the hand of love. Now watch, and I'll show you the story of life. Those fingers, dear hearts, is always a-warring and a-tugging, one agin t'other. Now watch 'em! Old brother left hand, left hand he's a fighting, and it looks like love's a goner. But wait a minute! Hot dog, love's a winning! Yessirree! It's love that's won, and old left hand hate is down for the count!"

I've never really understood how someone can muster actual hate for a game.
Previously known by the name of "GrimGent".

Neither have I, GG, but some people do.

Most of them don't. "Hate" is highly over-used in the current English vernacular. If you don't like something, you're a "hater" who "hates on" something. Highly confusing to some of us ferners...

Well, I hate d20 - not because I don't like the game itself, but because it brings out the worst in people. Same goes for Exalted and many Forge games. I really can't stand the attitudes that are created by love for these games.

Well, it's certainly easier to frame a negative argument than to offer more information.  :)

I also think it's a general societal thing - a lot of people I know (I try to keep them at a distance) spend a sizeable portion of their lives looking for something to get pissed off about.  When they find it, they sieze upon it like a pit bull on a barbecue sauce-covered neighbor.

Adrenaline, a kernel of control in an uncontrollable world, a feeling of higher status - I'm sure there are as many reasons for searching for the anger rush as there are people.  There are a lot of things going on in the world that [i/]do[/i] justify a lot of anger that aren't this - but then again, why the HELL am I trying to FORCE everyone on this board TO OBEY MY SENSE OF PRIORITIES??!!!

Would it surprise you to know that I don't have you on my ignore list anywhere?

Though I disagree with you taste wise, I don't find you to be unreasoning.

All the Palladium hate is getting old fast.

There are atleast two other sites people can post their hate of Palladium on.
