This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

You win! I'll go buy all their stuff right now and start playing it to show how well-adjusted I want to be.

You missed the point.

You don't have to like anything.
You don't have to buy anything.
You don't even have to say anything.

All you need to do is show some respect to your fellow community members.

And this doesn't even require you to do anything. I.e. you can accomplish this just by avoiding threads that happen to be about games you don't like, don't play, and don't know anything about.

The roleplaying hobby is not about activism.

When I crash another thread simply to crap on a game or how somebody's playing it, call me on it, because that's definitely out of line.

Complaining about presenting my opinions, positive and negative, in my own "introduction" post, that's not going to get through to me.

But I will continue to read posts about games I don't play, even ones I don't like, and especially games I don't know anything about, because there's always new bits I can take for my own use, it's always good to hear different perspectives (especially those very different from my own), and seeing something stated in certain ways has changed my opinions before.

It is a bit, when you're trying to sell the idea to someone that's on the fence about playing a new game/playing RPGs at all for the first time. Well, maybe not activism but certainly the ability to be persuasive about all its wonderful benefits. :D

Shit, I never realized it.  I'm only buying stuff from WotC to make myself feel better.

You win! I'll burn every WotC book I own right now and never buy another to show how well-adjusted I want to be.

Apparently your own enlightenment...congrats on breaking away from the tired, cliched, all-big-companies-are-evil stance.  It's so last century.

And welcome...yet another Jim for TheRPGSite.

Just like my gaming habits, my favorite movies, most of my favorite music, my favored comic book runs...

On joining the RPG site:

Welcome!

On Swine:

Swine is thinking your style of gaming is "better than" / "superior too" that of others. It's thinking that because of the games you play or your preferences you're somehow superior (or have superior taste, or whatever).

It's thinking you have the unusual clarity of mind to recognize a quality game that the masses are unable to appreciate (as opposed to simply preferring something that happens to be different)

It's thinking that the popular and traditional games and models cause brain damage or power struggle. It's believing that the role of the traditional D&D DM corrupts because the DM has absolute authority in the game.

Basically it's taking a point of view that's insulting to the rest of the hobby.

That perspective underlies a lot of theory and the indie movement; it's not enough to simply love their games -- the movement has to criticize mainstream games and gamers.

That's swine. I recommend eschew it: next time you think "This Indie Darling is so much higher quality than that awful WoTC D&D," remind yourself that that's just your opinion and as such it's no more or less valid than the guy's next to you.

And (statistically) the odds are the guy next to you loves D20.

If this seems outlandish or crazy -- if you think you have a special ability to recognize and appreciate quality that most people don't... well, that's the Swine talking ;)

Cheers,
-E.
