This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I used to watch GrimJim's political content years ago, but little by little the guy just went off the rails desperately trying to hold on to his leftwing identity. And his anti-"rightwing" arguments are just crap, beating on a strawman of a late 20th century caricature of a religious conservative, or whatever narrative the media is pushing about certain issues, like the pandemic hysteria. Which eventually led him to quit Inappropriate Characters to disassociate with Pundit, despite Pundit being demonstrably right about many of his views, and Jim just reasserting the prescribed media narrative or his views about whatever topic without properly refuting what people are actually saying. It just became hurtful to watch.

Steven Mitchell

There is no one I watch regularly.  The information contained in a typical video I could read in an article in 1/10 of the time or less.  I need to be really interested in the topic to put up with the delay.

I agree. It's especially easy given how self-aware I am of the fact I'm Grim's polar opposite, as a Texan>American of mixed heritage, I think Grim needs to make a trip here to Lone Star and get some BBQ and whiskey in his belly, and roll some dice out here and get a better picture of reality. He'd have a gas if I took him to rifle-range.

Jim would literally fall into a ball and collapse if he had to leave the house. Whatever medical pills he's on prevents him from going outside and talking to the world at large. He's on full disability in the UK, pulls in minimal dollars from RPG products. He's one step above Zak S from living in his proverbial car , which he probably does not have cause UK, with his cat.

Give him a gun? He would be utterly terrified of shooting it. You'd hear every excuse in the book why it's a "No Good Bad Idea".

Seeing Jim in the fresh air, sunshine, good food and drink would be the epitomie of the Babylon Bee series of the couple that moved to Texas from Commifornia.

I wish you all the best in helping Jim overcome his fear of Freedom, Liberty, and the pursuit of Touching Grass.

That being said, I'm all for a visit to Texas for Booze, Brisket, and Boom  Booms.

GrimJim is at least on the correct side of the freedom of speech issue. It's not much but it puts him above the typical socialist.
Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing. ~Robert E. Howard

Seth Skorkowsky

https://www.youtube.com/@SSkorkowsky

His earlier works covers a lot of the 1E/2E modules.  He does a fair bit about general DM'ing and his skits with characters are entertaining.  Last month he did the origin of the mimic as revenge for jerk ass players with him appearing to be portraying Gary Gygax from the glasses and wig and the coke (can't forget Gary's Hollywood days).  He does a lot more on traveler and cthulu today.
-side note: I've been there, I understand this skit 100%.  I created an entire race of dwarves with golems to deal with a player playing a broken class.  He's going to have to face copies of himself, but played much better.

Captcorajus

https://www.youtube.com/@captcorajus

He does a lot on older TSR content and modern content as well.  He just did a review of Dark Wizard Games new kickstarter for "Village on the borderlands".  You can see old games (car ward, heroquest, conan etc) as well.  A lot on Mystara as well, its a very good smattering of TSR and OSR content.  Content like Star Frontiers, Gamma World, OSR systems, unboxing authentic holmes edition dice (favorite), and in some modules he pushes modern maps to make them easier (really good for Expedition to Barrier Peaks - try mapping that out digitally I did it for the 1st level, took a look and said FUCK IT, I used his recommendation).

Dungeon Craft

https://www.youtube.com/@DUNGEONCRAFT1/featured

He's been chasing the algo, not really increasing, but most of his stuff is decent. He has been focusing on WotC drama (chasing the algo) and current trends in 5E.  That being said, he does cover older content, like the passing of Russ Nicholson, the artist for Fiend Folio, DCC, Warlock, Warhammer Fantasy that everyone loves.  I didn't see that on other channels.  The details were dark and ghoulish in Fiend Folio, so much better than what WotC has ever put out.  I suggest skipping the latest drama on his channel he keeps schlocking out and go to his playlist and to the Campaign.  The Campaign is his take on livening up Keep on the Borderlands.  I used most of his content in it to liven up the old keep for the better.  Using a german named merchant the party rescues, putting a mutual trade for the monsters to explain why they are all in the caves of chaos, changing some of the monsters, hell putting in a drug in the caves wasn't half bad as well.  It makes for a much better starter module than the original.  He's got some good ideas on campaigns and running them.

Tim Cask

https://www.youtube.com/@kaskoid

He's one of the best living fossils from TSR sharing his views on game design, TSR history, his times acting as the editor for Dragon Magazine, working for Gary and answering questions from his audience.  It doesn't have a huge subscriber count, and its criminal.  Its a way to get some incite from someone from the TSR area hired by Gary with a lot of Gary's game design tendencies.  Think of it as the next best thing to ask Gygax for rulings.  When he dies, we lose a bit of history from the TSR days.  If you got some questions on old TSR, he's most likely literally the last guy you can ask, when he dies and he's old as dirt, that information is gone.

Dungeoncraft is entertaining but he's been kinda losing me lately for some reason I can't put my finger on.

I've watched a couple captcorajus vids and liked his output.

Ben Milton/Questing Beast is clearly an OSR enthusiast and he's okay sometimes.

Bob World Builder seems to now be an OSR channel (DCC, Cairn, etc.) with occasional D&D commentary. I feel he's pretty genuine on-camera and there's something to be said for that.

Old Grognard Says is an AD&D 2e channel half the time. That still counts as OSR, right?

I also like BECMI Berzerker if I am not too tired when I start watching.

Actually, a lot of these videos are great when I just need to finish being put to sleep.

It's because Dungeoncraft has been chasing the algo and changing his content.  When WotC shit the bed, he followed that quite a bit.  His older campaign content is useful.  But I don't need another video telling me WotC screwed up.  WotC screwing up is like you own an incontinent dog and you are shocked he wet himself again.  There is nothing that WotC can do that I would not be surprised from.  I'm waiting for WotC to host Drag & Dungeons for 8 year olds in Seattle with registered sex offenders and they drug and rape everyone there.  It's WotC, they are woke, corrupt and stupid.

Klytus

Can't believe no one has mentioned The Dungeon Minister yet. Probably the most wholesome OSR channel on YT. It's a Canadian Anglican priest who runs BECMI for his wife and 3 sons.

Klytus, I'm bored. What plaything can you offer me today?

An obscure body in the S-K System, Your Majesty. The inhabitants refer to it as the planet... "Earth".

King Tyranno

I'll be honest, seeing the undeserved hype Shadowdark got from various OSR related You Tubers and the naked nepotism this showed really soured me on nearly all of them. I like BECMI Berserker. and I'll watch a bit of Seth and GrimJim every once in a while. But I struggle to really think of OSR You Tubers I watch beyond that.

I guess in general though I'm getting tired of seeing identical looking 40 to 50 year old neckbeards ramble to their shitty webcams. That's why I liked BECMI Berserker's more edited videos. We need more stuff like that. Polished, well thought out videos that respect your time.

RPGPundit

I have to admit the recent things going on regarding the BroSR has left me more soured with the group of Youtube "influencers", the OSR guys who mainly make money from youtube rather than producing games. Maybe as some of them start to produce more games, their priorities might change, but right now this is exactly the sort of stuff influencer-culture does to a hobby: a lot of them are more scared of losing subs than of doing the right thing. Not all of them, of course, but I noticed that the people who actually make OSR games were largely aligning to one side, the ones who only talk about games on youtube mostly aligning to the other side.
