Since another thread has wandered into culinary musings I thought I would make it official...So what is your favorite nosh on game night and do you consume while at the table or is snacky time seperate from active play time?
The old standby Pizza (vegan/gluten free the last few years) is a fave. though lately fruit and green smoothies paired with pistachios and the random spicy chip smothered in middle eastern style dip has taken pole position for me!
No alchohol while I game...save that for after! Mead/sweet (cheap) sangria being my poison of choice.
A bag of sliced apples and some juice, usually. I find I avoid the crash that comes from feasting on sugar and all those yummy white carbs.
Tonight I had white cheddar popcorn and some sweet tea.
I don't drink during games... anymore. :hmm:
There's a girl in my Rogue Trader game who brings homemade cookies that are awesome. We nosh while we eat.
With my D&D group, we eat pizza and Dr. Pepper mainly, but we interrupt the game for it.
Haribo (http://www.haribo.com/planet/uk/info/frameset_marken.php)
Pizza is a classic, though our CoC GM (who plays the drifter amateur astrogator in our Traveller game) has been bringing a mean sfiha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sfiha) to our latest games.
We've also found that eating right before the game is a time-saver for us.

guh... strretching the definition of food there...;)
Battle Carrots, home-made hummus, home-made baked goods, fruit trays, various flavored kettle chips. Drinks are mostly water of whatever Blue-Sky my wife and I picked up that week.

Sfiha looks yummy...middle eastern style foods are a big hit with me,anything with eggplant YUM!
Eating right before with with official stretch/refresh breaks interspersed seems to work for most groups I run.
Eating in the midst of game at table has allways annoyed me...all that mouthy crunchy/slurping detracts from the atmosphere, unless its in the midst of a zombie horde combat ;)!,and the risk of greasy fingers/spills on books freaks me out!
Feel free to post some simple recipes/links to such all...god that sounds so Martha Stewertish..(is this appropriate for an RPG sight?)
Here is one of my fave smoothie recipes, very light and refreshing!
half a "meaty" style melon (honeydew, cantalope etc.)
2 stalks celery
1" ginger
option: some cucumber (which is a melon)
put melon in blender first and blend till smoothy!

fruit tray mm-mm good.
dare I ask,what...exactly...is a "battle carrot"?
I am laughing out loud as I post this :rotfl:
Chips n salsa, and Mountain Dew, and Jones soda when we can get it.
We have dinner and snacks and baked goods.
And Wine and some Mead.

We alternate, but normally we also have people bring snacks, and 4-5 people bring wine.
Here is a recent quote.
"Igbarian session, 2/29 (Tokush the 29th), last night, full attendance (7 players and a spouse), with dinner consisting of "Chicken 40 cloves of garlic", 4 cheeses, 10 loaves of bread to sop up the gravy, mixed greens salad, and cranberry walnut bread. Drank Giacomo Feniccio Cannubi Barolo 04, Silverado Reserve 02 Cab, Sterling 05 cab, Chappelet06 cab (Joe's Volvo, we call it), an 06 Aglianioco, a Rhone, and a Shiraz."We always start 5:30-6 pm on Sunday, eat, cook, and get into game-mode and do char maintainence until about 6:30-7pm, then really gert serious.

I'd love to have a real, honest-to-God dinner before gaming, but my group is a tad too... heterogeneous for that.
So we order pizza and soda. It's gastronomically uninspired, but a crowd-pleaser.
We do drink spirits on occasion.
A good cigar.

wow, that is quite a spread...just wow...has anyone gotten a bit tipsy and effected the game in a bad way with all those spirits being quaffed ?
I have never had good experience with alchohol/herb before/during game but perhaps that is just a reflection of the types I have gamed with in the past!, might work with responsible folk...;)
I prefer to recap with a night-cap aftergame!

In the last 2 years, Clark wiped out his own character twice (taking someone with him once) partially, I believe, due to Booze. Joe might not have forgotten a fireball trap without the booze once.
But the game has trasnformed from my soda and cookies origins. It has become a very, very social experience. See the first entry Here (http://celtricia.pbworks.com/how-it-is-played) for more.

 thanks for sharing the link, will be studying this, very cool stuff!
Our group will often do potlucks.
I make a mean batch of BBQ Beef or Chicken.
Another guy makes an awesome fruit salad.
And we have a true baker for desserts.
As far as snacks go, I tend to avoid candy these days. Chips and salsa - especially Mango Salsa is always good.
My all time favorite game snack though is Strawberry Goober with Ritz Crackers. Oh man. I really try not to buy that stuff anymore, but I have the willpower of a 3.5 Fighter on most game nights.... :o :D
Dinner, wine, a good pipe. That's all I need.

They're what we break out instead of calling for initiative. When the carrots come out it's time to throw down.

You're a steroetype, but a good one. :)
My gaming group is sorta split...
...some of us have realized that pizza, sweets and "junk food" just makes us sick.
Our snacks have taken on healthier fare in the last few years.
Though hot-wings do make the occasional appearance. :)
Since one of our members raises cattle to sell sides of beef, steaks and BBQ are fiarly standard.
Few of my participants are as open to trying foreign foods as I am... *sigh*

I suggest vegan, gluten free pizza with lots of veggies as a healthy alternative to the junky variety.Good tasting and fun to eat!
Fruit makes an awesome replacement for sweets and is loaded with vitamins and water!
Bummer about the foriegn foods...:)

sooo...the one with the longest carrot strikes first?
Nah, more like instead of calling for initiative the group knows that once carrots are laid on the table it's time to roll initiative.
But it really only works for the first combat of the evening. The groups hates to have snacks taken away.
We stick mainly with the old school pizza and pop (or soda for you non-midwesterners). One all-meat for the carnivores and one with at least some form of vegetation on it. In general we live down to our fatbeard roots on game nights.
The GM and I usually start with a couple tokes off the bowl around 5:30. Pizza usually arrives around 6:00 and we eat and shoot the shit until 7:00. Then we get down to business. Usually take a break around 8:30 or 9:00 as the GM is required to read a bedtime story to the rugrat. We wrap up around 10:00 or shortly thereafter. A couple more tokes, a healthy dose of bullshitting, and it's time to head home. Simple pleasures for simple folk.
We don't really eat during play other than a couple pretzels or chips. We don't drink much as a group either. One player is diabetic, and another is just plain straightlaced (nothing wrong with that). The GM and I are the only ones that may have a beer here or there, but that's about it.
Quote from: skofflox;402059Goober man huh...interesting....:p
I know. It sounds strange. But give it a try. If you have any liking for food dishes that combine something crunchy/salty with something sweet, you will be surprised how good it is.
I do recommend milk to wash it down though. :)
Two of the players usually bring several boxes of candy, and one is a candy junky. The rest of us usually have light popcorn. I usually have a Coke, and then refill with water during the rest of the game. Sometimes, I will have a beer or two. Occasionally, the GM will join me for a beer.
The halcyon days of Whiskey Role-Playing are few and far between these days for me.

Nice.I used to do a bit o'reef'n before game but now I like to do that while designing scenarios and staying straight for game night. Tend to go off on tangents when smok'n.

Really? I never considered myself "high-fallutin". Hell, I didn't think Lansing Michigan could ever be called a "big city" either. I'll be damned. Actually, I always considered "pop" to be the redneckier (I done made me a word :)) term compared to "soda". Maybe it's even more regional than I thought. :hmm:
I always thought "pop" referred to the bubbles rising to the surface and "popping". :idunno:
Around here (southwestern Ohio, southeastern Indiana, piece of Kentucky) everyone says Soda Pop or just ' Pop'. Sometimes they ask for a "Cokle" - but they are referring to whatever brown cardonated soda pop is available.
The Really picky ones might say : "Damn this is Pepsi I wasn't expecting that. "
Of course, all the colors of Mountain Dew is still the most popular beverage for most gamers that I've seen. I prefer the read and orange versions myself.

I took a trip to Arkansas once (once and never again, no offence to the people, but y'all have too many bugs the size of household pets). Anyway, they seemed to use "Coke" as a general term for all soft drinks. As in "I'll take a Coke".
"What flavor?"
"Grape."
Maybe I just misinterpreted the conversation I overheard, but it seemed odd to me.
In Texas, it is "Coke" or sometimes "Soda".
If I really don't like someone, then cheese doodles and be sure to borrow their books constantly. Otherwise, graham crackers.

In Kansas City, all the folks in the city and outlying suburbs call it "soda". The people on the farms and further out call it "pop" and most people in the farms of Missouri call it "pop" but any time you get to a town of any size, it's "soda".
That's my "midwest experience".
Now for another one... It's only the "midwest" if it's west of the Mississippi river. If it's east of the Mississippi, but west of the Appalachians, then it's the "mideast". ;)
Not to derail the thread, my group has no set food patterns, but this map might be interesting for the pop vs soda discussion.

Don't ask me why, but I find that utterly fascinating. Excellent find!
Now I see Vellorians big spot of "soda" around the Missouri/Illinois border. Meanwhile Michigan is all blue "pop". See, I told ya. :)
Oh, oh yeah, food discussion, sorry . . .
Our group doesn't really do "snacks". Once in a while someone will bring something for themselves to snack on because they're hungry, but the thing we do as a group is a full-blown supper at some point in the session.

Ben, you were already invited to play in Celtricia, and drink my wine. Now I'm going to have to start trading recipes. How mundane...
One of the best parts of life, my friend. :)
The primary group I play in takes place at the house of some folks who seem pretty vegetable-phobic. I bring veggies and hummus or a Greek salad and the GM seems pretty grateful lol! This and the 2nd group I'm in do a potluck on game evenings. Nothing as fancy as Benoist though!
I have nothing against the pizza-doritos-mountain dew RPG sessions of course. I've done it zillions of times before. But when we're between friends like we were with those Ptolus games, that we're all adults and all, it's kind of nice to have a good meal together before jumping in the game. It's part of the whole social experience. There's the game, the fun of being together of course, and then there's the food and drinks and the little talk and bounding that comes from it. It's awesome.

Quote from: Insufficient Metal;403217You have sushi at your gaming table?

One of the ladies who plays with our Igbar Group rolls her own Maki. She taught a lot of other people I know who make good Maki, but she...I don't know how...makes the best sushi I've had.
I mean, we order out from what is rated by Zagats as the best Sushi in Boston (Oishi), and her Sushiis as good or better. She comes over 2 hours before we game, about once a year, and rolls it.
I used to play with someone who would bring a thermos of hot tea and a couple of cheese & tomato sandwiches to munch on. We did consider giving him a clocking-on card after a while.
Coffee and cookies.
I don't screw around when it comes to eating on game day. I'll get up at 8 am for a noon game time and start cooking. Last time I did beer braised shredded pork belly tacos with plum salsa. In the past we've enjoyed vol au vent with chicken and bechamel. The creamy tomato soup en croute was rad. So were the grilled steaks with a blue cheese crumble.
Next week I'll poach sausages in beer and serve them on a bed of caramelized onions. The side will be crushed baby rose tomatoes cooked in duck fat. Mmm...duck fat.....
