This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Ordinary vs Extraordinary

Bang on.
I was just about to reply to Jimbob citing John McClane as an example of an "Ordinary" guy. He's a cop, he's competant, but he's not an all conquering ass-kicking machine. Murtagh (Danny Glovers char) in the Leathal Weapon series is another. Just an ordinary guy, competent at his job.
Riggs otoh, is leaning towards the Extraordinary. He's not just a cop, he's a psycho-suicidal cop, martial artist, crack shot and former CIA Vietnam veteran. Just about any character played by Ah-nuld, Van Damme or Segal is in the extraordianry camp.

That works for me, too. (Incidentally, Target had the DieHard trilogy DVDs on special over the weekend and I snagged them)

I have difficulty believing that if a real person was in McClain's shoes, they wouldn't be hamburger. Which is the reason I erred on the side of "extraordinary".
The Secret Volcano Base: my intermittently updated RPG blog.

Running: Pathfinder Scarred Lands, Mutants & Masterminds, Masks, Starfinder, Bulldogs!
Playing: Sigh. Nothing.
Planning: Some Cyberpunk thing, system TBD.

Quote from: O'BorgBy "extraordinary" I mean characters who, if they were an NPC, would stand out like a sore thumb amidst their peers.
You know, going by that definition Nobilis PCs wouldn't be "extraordinary"...
Previously known by the name of "GrimGent".

Imperator

I like both styles, but having to choose, I tend to prefer ordinary people. Generally speaking, I tend to prefer more gritty games.
My name is Ramón Nogueras. Running now Vampire: the Masquerade (Giovanni Chronicles IV for just 3 players), and itching to resume my Call of Cthulhu campaign (The Sense of the Sleight-of-Hand Man).

Depends upon the setting and the situation.  I'm afraid I can't answer your poll as it stands.

Same for me.  As so often happens, I have to answer that sometimes I feel like a nut, sometimes I don't.  :deflated:

I answered "Ordinary" presupposing - perhaps wrongly - that you meant "Very Competent through Non-Comptetent" rather than "Non-Competent only"

Quote from: jeff37923I love the idea of the ordinary hero in the extraordinary situation. Probably one of the reasons why I like Traveller so much.

What he said, pretty much verbatim.

That's the way I took it.  I voted ordinary too--I like playing above-average joes that can make a difference.  So, give me a James Bond scenario over a Superman one.

Whichever one fits the game being played that session. I don't want to play Superman in a street level Shadowrun game. Private Jake Nobody is off the table in a cosmic supers game. But if it fits the genre and the game is fun, I'm happy.

NYTFLYR

Both...

Depends on the game. I dont want to play someone Ordinary in Champions and I dont want to play someone Extraordinary in WHFRP

i guess you couldn't modify a poll after it's been posted?  such as by adding another answer choice?  :raise:
