I am revising and rebuilding your Dark Heresy system, a system you inherited from Black Library and which is therefore not your fault, but that is badly designed nonetheless, in my spare time. Sexual violence towards children is banned? I say, where is the fun in that?

Ghost Whistler

So they want people to invent monsters or to stat up stuff that hasn't been statted up yet?
"Ghost Whistler" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Parental death, alien battles and annihilated worlds.

If you think what I laid out is in any way difficult, I would recommend playing Dark Heresy sometime and counting the number of discrete operations required to complete a ranged attack, or try to completely describe the sequence of rolls and modifiers that come into play when a space marine drinks poison in Deathwatch. The current 40KRP system plays like some guy's badly designed homebrew of WFRP, not the product of a "professional" game designer(s).

Rogue Trader and Deathwatch both demonstrate to anyone who has played them, that FFG has no fucking idea how to improve on the system, to the point where I have decided after my most current Deathwatch campaign concludes that I will never run a game in the system-as-written again.

Dark Heresy in particular is ripe for a 2nd edition free from the BL-induced nonsense. It's been a couple of years, the problems with the system are well known, and they're running low on ideas. The lack of new alternate class ranks for anyone but clerics; the diminishing number of new backgrounds and homeworlds in each supplement despite the wealth of material not yet tapped; the lack of new psychic powers outside of sorcery & the inability to finalise that; the supplemental authors' obvious lack of familiarity with the line that manifests itself in repetition; the design and presentation of gear indicating a total lack of familiarity with play-situations, etc.

Quick, how many distinct torture-glove-type devices are there in Dark Heresy?

Some simple innovations my rebuild will be introducing:

Roll-over percentile system. Roll+stat+bonuses-penalties succeeds if it equals or exceeds target number 101. All bonuses and penalties affect the roll, not the target number. Degrees are static like the target number (111 = 1 degree of success).

Ones digit of the roll determines which part of the body you hit, no reversing-the-roll-and-consulting a chart.

Weaker class system. More and better homeworlds, backgrounds, etc.

Origin path & random generation alternate character creation methods with an incentive to go all random.

Fewer and more meaningful talents and skills leading to a flatter character complexity curve.

And so on. Like I said, it's the system FFG should have been preparing to release from say, Deathwatch onwards.

And yet when I raised concerns about the system you couldn't wait to bitch me out! Irony!

Anyway, this article seems to suggest that they intend to roll out either of these systems for other games since the task is to create any creature from any setting (which may or may not mean an existing setting, it's not particularly clear), but using either fantasy or 40k rules.

TBH, now that I read this I'm rather confused as to what they are actually asking. It seems to suggest I can invent a Star Wars alien and use 40k to stat him up, or invent something entirely of my own, such as Zarg the Robot Tax Collector, and do likewise.

No easter eggs and no comedy?

No wonder they fucked WFRP up.

I guess this could be for the new Star Wars RPG, among other things.

Yeah get freelancers to fill the Warhammer splats while FFG put their writers on to Star Wars.  :p

I understand why they would reject applicants who write such content, but it seems a little odd they would mention this in the writing sample guidelines.

Now that you mention it, it is a little odd.  It sounds a little like something coming down from GW, but this is just an open tryout.

I'm thinking they must get a lot of Slaanesh fanwank material in their submissions.

Your concerns were stupid and irrelevant, and were about how they hadn't put enough monsters in & how you were too lazy to do basic DM duties. Mine are more serious complaints coming from running a campaign for half a year or so.
