This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Familiar names when I least expect it ...and that "WAR" thing

As I said in another thread, I saw a copy of Hinterwelt's "Squirrel Attack" at a game store Friday afternoon.

Thats not all I saw there.

In that store's GURPS section ...and little to the right of it on the shelf was "Squirrel Attack!" , a sequel book to it .....and something called ELFs by a Ron Edwards.

 I stopped and looked again.
Nah ... couldn't be the same Ron Edwards could it ?

The same one that everytbody mentions here on RPGSite?

So I show the 3 books to that store's owner/Manager Matthew - nice guy he is. He's the one I mentioned who is a tad annoyed with Living Greyhawk ending.

He told me he's had a few customers buy "Squirrel Attack!" - he doesn't know if they played it or not ...but he loves the sense of humor shown in it.
(It really is a nice little book, folks - I seriously consaidered grabbing it ...but I had a limited budget)

 Now the other book......

I told Matthew that I had read about this guy  on the web  ...then he tells me about the obnoxious comment in the back of it.
On the last page of ELFs there is a comment where Edwards says basically that if you were offended in some way - then he has done his job...and he basically insults anyone reading the back page.

Mathew, who has never heard of the "war" before I mentioned it to him just said "The guy seems like an obnoxious jerk. "

Oh, He has a nice store - if you know Cincinnati , its in the Mt. Healthy part of town on Hamilton Avenue. He's got drinks and snacks and tables for peoplt to game at.

I got the same feeling from Elfs. It's like a long drawn out insult to gamers everywhere. Didn't know about the actual insult in the back though. I really do not appreciate games like Elfs.

My friend Mathew's first encounter with the name Ron Edwards was seeing that book.

The above was in response to GrimGent....not meant to come out snarky - sorry if it did. Dar - just posted quicker than I  did.

4e definitely has an Old School feel. If you disagree, cool. I won\'t throw any hyperbole out to prove the point.

So let me understand this, Koltar.  You are going into an aquaintances game store, finding a game by an author against whom, I guess, you are philosophically opposed and basically badmouthing that author to the store owner.  Is this correct?  What is your motivation in doing this?  Do you want him to take the game off the shelf?

I am no fan of Ron Edwards and not a big proponent of The Forge (though nobody seems to believe me here when I say that), but it just doesn't seem very good for the hobby in general to go around dissing other people's games at game stores.  Maybe I read wrong what happened there, and if so I apologize for making assumptions.  But I would argue that there is room in game stores for a range of games, including ones that make fun of other games (which from that linked review, I understand Elfs to be).

you didn't actually read his post, did you?

I mean, you can't have failed reading comprehension so badly as to miss the fact that it was the store owner who called Ron Edwards an "obnoxious jerk", so I can only assume you didn't actually read it.

Quote from: ColonelHardissonHere I thought this thread would be about the awesome Wayne A. Reynolds, aka WAR.

Ahhh, say what you want about dungeonpunk, but Reynolds sure knows how to draw some kickass pictures.

Also, he can do historical. A big plus in my book.

Wow, guess you guys just don't get it. I haven't seen Elfs, but after reading the rpg.net review I think I have a pretty clear idea of the sort of game it is...it's about inverting stereotypes and basically letting your id out for a party. Sounds like a lot of fun. As for Ron "insulting" anyone, guess you would complain about the Onion insulting just about everyone too. It's called taking the piss, otherwise known as satire.

Man, you uptight midwestern type guys should come to Australia. A few beers and a lot of piss-taking later, you'll be giving as good as you get and loving it. Insulting each other is the national sport.

WalkerP - calm the fuck down.

You are reading way too much into things.

This GameStore manager and I compare notes all the time. It was along the lines of "Hey what do you think of this ?" "Is this actually selling?" ...and me , Ed C. saying Hey I recognize these names .... Bill Hinterwelt ...and Ron Edwards.

It was Mathew (gamestore Manager/owner guy) that gave me a heads up about the comment in the back of the booklet.

My store has some things his doesn't. His store has many things we don't. If we are "competitors" - then we're friendly ones in The Galt's Gulch sense of that phrase.

 Zheesh!!!

I was surprised to see the booklets at all - I got the impression that most of stuff was pdfs or something similiar.

Okay, fair enough. And the point of your OP was what?  Just that you saw a strange combo of books together on the shelf, ones that represent two sides of this supposed ideological divide?

I would be grateful to see any small press titles on the shelves of our LGS.  They have an incredible selection of everything else.  I think they just check off the entire catalog their distributor sends them.  But try to find anything that isn't hooked into the major distribution channels and you get blank stares or general snottiness.

so you're saying that everyone in Australia is a bitter old cunt who prints nothing but pathetic screeds to make up for their failure at their chosen career?
