No.

I am a huge fan of LARPing. I've had tremendous fun both as a player and GM.

LARPs can do immersion really well. Any RPGer who enjoys immersion should give LARP a try.

Oh, and there's lots of sex in LARP groups.

Quote from: Baulderstone;978687My takeaway from their video...

Running around outside and engaging with other human beings = lame.
Skulking by yourself in a parking lot with an iPad = cool.

Good point!

Quote from: Tyndale;978896The only reason this is funny is that we are more relevant than we were ten year ago - a good thing.  And now that I think about it more, I say this add should be celebrated.

Good point!

And its even funnier that the ad appears to have bounced back on them.

In an age where huge numbers of teens and young adults play D&D inspired video games and watch LotR movies, it is not sensible to make fun of these things to promote an ESPN sports game.

Quote from: Dirk Remmecke;978645Didn't ESPN (or ESPN 2?) broadcast the MtG championships, live from the WotC Game Center in Seattle?
(At least that's what the WotC employee claimed when he gave me a tour of the premises in ... 2000? 2001?)

Back in the mid 90 to late 90's, MTG was on ESPN or ESPN2 during the day with live broadcasting of MTG tournaments. That's absolutely true.

Quote from: Chainsaw;978909ESPN's still in business? ;)

If they stick to their current course, it will be a much diminished business very soon.  They are already bleeding subscribers.  I just canceled my DirectTV.  ESPN wasn't the only reason, but it was it a big motivating factor that drove me to look for options.  Since DirectTV didn't have a way to get what I wanted without paying for ESPN, they got dropped along with ESPN.

Last time I checked, people doing LARPs weren't working hard to motivate me to cut out a chunk of payments to anyone. :)

No not wrong at all. :D

I ran LARP Events for over a decade from 1992 to 2003. Managed a NERO LARP chapter successfully from 1999 to 2003. It can be a hobby or business that one can enjoy. It takes practice and skill just like in tabletop to play a character or to run events and campaigns.

As mentioned it great for immerision and first person roleplaying. A crowd of PCs and NPCs interacting with each other flows far more naturally and in more interesting ways than tabletop. However the Live Action has as both safety and practical limitations that tabletop is not subject too. And there is a bit of work by committee to the creative aspect as well.

The net result is that LARPS are their own things just as MMORPGS are their own thing as well as CRPGs. Along with tabletop RPGs each can be enjoyed on their own merits.

My avatar picture is of me as Duke Endless Star. One of the characters I played in NERO LARP. I also roleplayed Argyll a Highland Warrior, and Marcus a Merchant who also is an assassin loyal to the kingdom.

I also find that funny, but then people are often interested in what millionnaires do;)!

That's why college football is and always will be the best sport in the world. :D

Except for all the hypocrisy, greed, cronyism, scandals, the protection of rapists, and utter bull shit it spews on a yearly basis......College Football is pretty great! NCAA is a fucking joke though. And I say that as someone who played 4 years at a collegiate level (albeit a small one).

As to the topic at hand: I have done LARPing (if hitting people with foam weapons and wearing armor in Dagorhir constitutes LARPing?) and did lots of sports (Baseball, Football, Lacross, Track and Field) and it sucks that ESPN decided to put a judgement call on either. I use the ESPN app for Fantasy Football and it's fun but it's not "Better". And funny enough, most of the people who actually DO Fantasy Football probably couldn't keep up/fight well in our LARPing events.

This is, however, nothing new. LARPing has been in the spotlight for a few years now and it's almost always used as a heel to a joke, or to make someone look bad or dorky or un-cool or whatever. It's pretty sad considering how much time and money people who actually do LARPing actually invest. Not to mention the plethora of people who actually go to events and participate. I'd love to see someone laugh at one of the Romans in their full suit of lorica segmentata, probably get a face full of a booted heel or the edge of their shield.

No no no! First they wack the ball with a stick and THEN chase it around. Everyone thought watches only to see if they lose one in the pond.

Does Larping require the removal of one's sense of humour then?

No arguing humour, apparently Larpers have their sense of humour surgically removed then?
