This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

ENWorld experiences financial trouble

Wonder if the slowness is from several disgruntled former users launching repeated "denial of service" attacks on it.

I've heard rumors to the same for some time now.
"Other RPGs tend to focus on other aspects of roleplaying, while D&D traditionally focuses on racially-based home invasion, murder and theft."--The Little Raven, RPGnet

Is there something more to it than just rumors, though?

You'd think there would be a way to not only know that was the cause, but track down who was doing it.

It could be from a botnet.

How stupid is this?

There are only a couple RPG companies that would be worth six-figure prices, much less web sites.
Off topic: Welcome back, OTS! Hope you stick around, as I missed your posts!

Could be Skynet, too. You never know...

Quote from: ICFTI;334346Well, ENWorld is the second largest general RPG discussion forum online, superceded only by RPGNet — as well as the second largest D&D discussion forum online, superceded only by the WotC forums. Also, for those suggesting that ENWorld is the only RPG discussion forum that ever asks for donations, I feel compelled to mention the very similar, semi-regular, RPGNet donation drives.

We pay our server costs by donations here. Fortunately, people have been very generous with us, and we haven't had to ask in quite some time now, which is why some might not realize this.

I thought that this may be the case, though I wasn't 100% certain.

Why are you such a dick?

Seriously.  Yes, I am a fan of EnWorld.  And I am a fan of therpgsite.  Why can't I comment on EnWorld, when someone brings up the topic, without you behaving like an asshole?

If someone said the same thing about therpgsite, I'd say "no, its not going to go under" as well.

I am 100% positive.  It's not speculation on my part.  Not going to say anything beyond that.

And on a vaguely related note, I represent another hobby based web site worth literally millions, and it's not THAT much bigger than EnWorld.

Hobby sites are frequented by a key demographic for a lot of large companies.  It's worth a lot in advertising dollars to get your message to that group.  You just have to cross a threshold for number of unique visitors and page views with the right demographic, and know how to take advantage of it.

It's not DOS attacks from what I have heard.  It's internal I think.

Comic books.

Because I think you are full of more shit than a Christmas Turkey. For the past few months you have made a habit of coming here to collect things to bitch about on Circus Maximus, for no other reason than your own self-aggrandizement.

You claim to represent the comic book hobby in some capacity in this thread and while your profile on this site has you listed as an attorney, your posts on EN World and Circus Maximus have imbedded advertisements for graduation gowns and class rings. That doesn't make sense.

Then to top it off, you say that you will not provide any more information about how you came by this insider knowledge you claim. Hiding behind vagueries and illusions of an understanding of the advertising business.

I call bullshit, bitch. Lay your cards on the table and show us your bona fides that prove you are someone who does not have his head up his ass on the interweb just pretending to be more important that what he really is.
"Meh."
