This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Retrofuturism: Sandalpunk and Candlepunk

Seems like maybe -punk indicates applying fantasy to technology? So by that hypothesis:

Cyberpunk means a future where fantasy is applied to computer network technology.
Steampunk means fantasy applied to steam technology (replacing actual post-steam tech).

So it's like your setting author is a "punk" about technology, in the sense that he/she makes up a fantasy tech situation and throws out unwanted tech and logic/limits in order to have that work. It's a bit like taking inspiration from sci fi fantasies written long enough ago to not know more modern techs, e.g. by Jules Verne (and/or by people who just don't know/care about it, or by people who just want to reinvent it for fun & imagination's sake).

-punk is the new black.  It's become a glyph that means "good thing".
You should go to GaryCon.  Period.

For example a game set in 1970's London.

Quote from: Catelf;947891I remember someone pointing out that it in "Steampunk" rather refer to a "Do It Yourself" - thought, but to be honest, I find the DIY to have arisen during the Rock'n'Roll era, rather than during Punk.

So "steampunk" should be called "steam'n'roll" instead?  Or maybe just "steamroll"...

Quote from: James Gillen;947635"Sandalpunk" sounds like taking the Ancient Greek setting and approaching it with postmodern snark that has little or no relevance to the source material.
In other words, Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.  :D

My first thought was the Disney animated Hercules, particularly the episode where Hercules is selling Gyros complete with a hat that looks like a sheep.

Steampunk, long before (like 20 years) it was adopted by the cosplay crowd, was a literary genre spearheaded by Gibson and DiFillipio, and in their works the "punk" edifice actually made sense. I think it was once cyberpunk and steampunk hit the RPG crowd a few years later that people began misusing and abusing the "punk" term.

Yeah the "Punk" in Cyberpunk is close to the "Punk" in the original Steampunk: both are technological dystopias, whether computer and cybertech or weird victorian science, with stories detailing the threats, challenges and struggles of the human individual in these alternate worlds.

All the Punk genres after that have really lost that meaning, and are more associated with the use of "Punk" as referring to alternate histories with a present or future that has different technological rules.

None of that has anything to do with the various "xPunk" fashion fads.

I think if the modern literature industry redirected .00001% of the time they spend on classifying everything so it can be focused marketed to actually finding and developing good writers as opposed to formulaic ones they can "brand", the world would suck a little less goat ass.  When you're sucking hot goat ass, even the smallest amount of relief counts.
Even the the "cutting edge" storygamers for all their talk of narrative, plot, and drama are fucking obsessed with the god damned rules they use. - Estar

All the "punks" are stupid, except Cyberpunk, which is only stupid half the time.
