So, last night was the first session of a new 5E campaign. One of the younger players, who've I've met a few times playing Age of Sigmar, & as a player in a session of my 5E campaign whips out a copy of MYFAROG before the session started, and then tried to explain what a great human Varg Vikernes is! I shut it down real fast, literally blown away that I was seeing a copy of this out in the wild (I've only read all the terrible things about it online), and encountering a person who is, well, deeply troubled at the least to believe reverently in white nationalism.

A short time later, he started defending David Duke, saying that BlacKkKlansman was a hit job on Duke, and started trying to white wash (pun intended) the KKK. Needless to say, the entire night turned into a shitshow, with a 3/4 TPK, tears, an hour long rage quit argument (we didn't meet the racist's high standards of what roleplaying should be, not withstanding the fact that this idiot is 19 years old, while some of us have been playing D&D for 35 years!)

The group is probably not going to continue, the racist will certainly not be invited if anyone else DM's a new game, and I'm extremely disappointed in the DM just by association with such a piece of shit player. Mostly just needed to vent, cause it was frankly unbelievable for me to encounter such a person in the real world!

They're out there; clutching their copies of Myfarog and binge-watching the first half of American History X. I don't know how common the little cockroaches are, but I'm sorry to hear you encountered one. Generally the worst I encounter is someone openly and unapologetically misogynistic to my female players. This dickhead was clearly a whole deeper level of failure.

What always takes me off-guard me is how surprised they are when I point them to the door. It adds weight to my theory that "the RPG community" is just one of many rungs of the social ladder they smash their chin on in their ultimate topple to becoming basement-dwelling, misanthropic hermits.

He's 19. Most of us were dumb at 19. So despite a poor start, there's some hope for him.

The proper response from the DM would have been to nip the drama in the bud by saying, "We are not playing MYFAROG today, we are playing D&D, now 6 orcs just showed up, roll for surprise." Whether the kid is invited back or not would depend on his response to that. People of all sorts of different ideas, even offensive ideas, can game together productively if they focus on the game.

The truly offensive part of your story is that you're playing 5th ed. If you've been playing 35 years you should know better and be playing AD&D1e.

Ahh. 19, and stupid as fuck. It reminds me why I sometimes think we should reinstate the draft. Or somehow do more throughout society to get more young kids to join the military. For the most part, being in the military goes a long way towards building great American citizens. I'm reminded of a time when I was first in my Rifle Platoon, in the FMF. I'd been there for about six weeks or so, and I had gradually noticed that there had been some one-racial cliques formed; some all-white, some all-black, for example.

Bright an early one morning, we had a 0700 formation, called by the First Sergeant. As an aside, for those that may not know, First Sergeants in a Marine Infantry Regiment are like gods. They answer really only to the Sergeant Major, and the Colonel. Everyone--even the officers--speak to these men with reverence. It something that is quite apart from official rank. These men are powerful, and enormously influential.

My First Sergeant was a giant black man, about 6'6". He'd been in the Corps for oh, god, 25, 30 years, maybe more. He had us out there in formation, standing in the early morning sun. He then launched into giving us all a huge verbal ass-whooping. He said,

"It has come to my attention that some of you mother fuckers are getting in all isolated racial cliques. All-black, all-white, and so on. That, gentlemen, is not acceptable. All of you are my Marines. We all stand ready to bleed and die for each other, and for our country. We are all Americans, and we are all GREEN. That's right. Every last one of us is mother-fucking GREEN. That's what colour we are. Let me hear that this kind of nonsense continues. I better see all y'all fuckers hanging out together, do I make myself CLEAR?

Everyone answered, in unison, "YES FIRST SERGEANT!!!"

The First Sergeant continued. He said,

My officers and NCO's will be watching. I will be watching. You men all know that I often like to go through the barracks, to see how all of my Marines are doing. Isn't that right? Again, we answered "Yes, First Sergeant!" He paused, pacing back and forth in front of us, like a chomping lion. He then said, "Let me hear or see y'all doing this again. Gathering in racial cliques, mumbling racist bullshit. I'll have anyone guilty of this in front of me faster than you can mother fucking BLINK, and I will set you straight, son. I will put my boot so far up your ass y'all be see'in stars.

DO I MAKE MYSELF CLEAR? We all responded, again in unison, "Yes, First Sergeant!"

We were then dismissed. In the following days and weeks, our NCO's and officers gave us little pep-talks, and monitored us. In truth, I didn't know anyone that had expressed any genuinely racists attitudes, nor did any of my buddies. But all of us--in my circle, we had an Asian, two black guys, three Hispanics, and six White Marines. We were all immensely impressed with how sincere, and swift the First Sergeant expressed himself to all of us. Just the mere "thought" that some few of us may have been leaning towards attitudes or behaviors that could be seen as racist--was heresy to the First Sergeant. It made me so proud to be serving in the Marines. At all times, our lives were in the hands of our Marine brothers. Joking with each other aside, true racists would not last long in my unit. As can be seen. Your Marine career would be fucked so fast your head would spin. Quite apart from some other Marine--of any colour--getting in your face, and publicly dressing you down right in front of your peers. My Marines were absolutely loyal and fearless, and didn't put up with that kind of nonsense.

Too bad this 19 year old gamer wasn't in the Marines, instead of circle-jerking himself in the civilian world. He'd get an education he'd never forget, that's for damn sure! And, interestingly enough, my group of Marines all played D&D with each other, as well. Playing with Marines from all over the country makes you into a better gamer, too!

I've played every single edition of D&D, 5E being a best of edition, hits a nice sweet spot for many people.

I've come to find out that the DM is very close friends with this shitstain, and is well aware of the racism, so at this point, this group is for sure splitting up. He never spoke up once during the entire shit show, that equals consent from him in my eyes.

Yeah... I'm not typically one to jump on the guilty by association bandwagon, but... I mean, there's a gulf between "Reasonably tolerant" and "You literally have a white supremacist at your table". There's a line, blurry as it's gotten nowadays, between "He said/did something thoughtless" and "His entire sense of identity is based around racism".

Furthermore: you can have friends that suck. Human relationships are complex, I'm not gonna judge somebody for having flawed friends. My 2/7 buddy was at 29 Palms for the most part. He did a little time as embassy guard in Kabul right before 9/11, but after he put 2 rounds of 5.56x45 into a belligerent Mossad Colonels leg, they sent him back to 2/7 and made him be a M249 gunner again

Let's see, I was proficient with the M16A2, M249, M240C, 25mm Bushmaster, and had passing knowledge of the TOW, (we used simulators, never got to fire a live one), M231, M203 and M60.
