This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

FTW? I'm not a kid and find their attempts at communication strangely grating... :D

Quote from: flyingmiceHi Zachary! Are you back and settled in?

I thought the Buffy/Angel games were the best, most true-to-source licensed games I ever saw. It's just unfortunate I couldn't stand the source.

Hey clash!  Good to be back!  Not quite settled yet, but I'm happy and with my family.  :)

I agree about the source material.  Not my cup of tea.  Then again, the Unisystem isn't one of my faves, either.   Nothing against it particularly, but not something that really grabbed my attention.

Wonderful! Glad you are back! We've missed you! New threads have significantly dropped off without you! :D

Unisystem is OK, though I liked full unisystem more than Cinematic. Cinematic seems to be a great tool for turning every setting into Buffy. OTOH, it does Buffy/Angel almost perfectly, and if that's what you like, you'll be a fan.

Starting comments in a suitably juvenile style is a good way to show that you don't neccesarily want to start discussing the subject in a serious mood here. Or it works the opposite way and will start a heated flame war. All depending on the forum. Yes, I feel optimistic today...

(It's "For The Win", roughly equivalent to "x > everything". It doesn't have anything to do with global fornication, as I initially assumed when I first read the abbreviation)

Ah! OK - I'm not familiar with it, so your experience trumps mine. :D

It wasn't lack of material that did it in, it was wrestling with Fox over licensing and approvals.  They've got one book ready to go and two more in the works at least partially completed, as well as one for Angel that will never see the light of day.

This is sad, but not exactly suprising.  Other than a slight revision/reprint of the core rules there hasn't been a new Buffy or Angel book since 2003.  So it's not exactly a big change.  Hopefully this frees them up to get Beyond Human and some other Cinematic Unisystem out.

As for me, well I'll hold my Angel puppet close and cry myself to sleep tonight.  :mourn:
I have a theory, it could be witches, some evil witches!

I've heard this sort of thing before with licensed products - things get stuck on the license holder's end for ages.  The license holders tend to be more careful nowdays with with their public images, so they like to sign off on things.  Yet at the same time, the money from an rpg is pretty small, so reviewing it to sign off is a low priority.

I really wonder if the extra rewards for a license product are ever worth the additional hassles/costs involved.

Well, judging from rpg.net, everyone and his little sister is splitting their gaming time between Exalted and Buffy ;) (Solar/Slayer slash fiction, here I come!)

But seriously, the only licensed RPG I can think of that really worked was Star Wars. But that's a setting that is wildly popular, has enough pre-existing material and still enough room for the exploits of the gamers.

Mr. Analytical

Evidently Serenity sold well too but that's also down to the fact that the show had a HUGE cult following who essentially bought everything with the words "serenity" or "firefly" on them.

Mcrow

While I never was into either show, I do like Unisystem.

I know there are a lot of folks that like these games, so to bad for them. On the bright side there is plenty of material to go on already.

Three for Buffy.  The Magic Box in paticular was very good, and if you want a good flexible magic system to use for any unisystem game, or even to scavenge for other systems I highly, highly recommend it.

I've got the The Magic Box, Monster Smackdown and Slayers Handbook for Buffy, there was also a screen released and a character journal I believe.

While Welcome to Sunnydale was I think finished it never got published and a few months ago they did a survey on thier website to see if folks would buy a PDF release.

I think the general response from fans was, "Give us the bloody book already!" since they had been waiting several years for it.

As for Angel, only a directors screen by the looks of it.
