This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

From the same blog that brought you the D&D commercial, now they have posted the intro from the D&D cartoon show.

  Wow, that brings back memories.

True story:  My gang watched that show before we got a copy of Unearthed Arcana and we never owned the Dragon magazine where the cav was first published.  As a result, one member of my school-age game group was absolutely convinced that the cavalier class was devoted to fighting with shield only, like a medieval Captain America.

Mr. Analytical

Ah yes... Dungeons and Dragons where the all-american teens are lead by the Aryan jock while the obviously jeiwsh Eric is an object of fun and scorn.  Meanwhile a midget with a taste for gaudy  red dressing gowns tries to kill them every week.

What made Eric "obviously" jewish?  It wasn't obvious to me.  I saw Eric as Reggie, from Archie Comics.

Ah, that brings me back...and Mr Analytical, that kind of racism is so endemic to 80s cartoons it isn't even funny.

or Ralph Malph of Happy Days....

Abyssal Maw

He WAS kind of a Reggie.

Heck, there was a black female character in the show, and she came off a lot cooler than either the nerdy wizard or the cowardly cavalier.
Download Secret Santicore! (10MB). I painted the cover :)

Eric had dark hair, dark eyes, eurasian features, a weird complexion, was weedy, clearly from a privileged background and everyone hated him for no apparent reason.  Short of giving him a big nose and a tendency to talk like a Catskills comedians you couldn't GET more jewish.

The whole cartoon is full of racist subtext.  You have the jock Ubermensch in charge and he's flanked by the hot red-head and the black chick (who is an acrobat thereby supporting the view that black people are more animalistic and physical than white people) and he's supported by the brutal, cosh-waving blonde younger kid.  Meanwhile the Jew and Presto (the decadent useless intellectual) are mocked and scorned in equal measure.

Hang on while I grab my Shield +3 vs. self-parodying political correctness.

I don't know if you're serious or not, but you're cracking me up here.

Keep it up!:D

They were just trying to take back "porch monkey".

You think they were bad, roll back a decade or three. The kind of racism in those cartoons would have made your great grandmother cry. That is, had she not been so racist herself.

Mr. Analytical: LOL. Ur funny.

I never picked up on these things until now.  Is it a "Now that we are older we notice these things" kind of thing or was it something you noticed even back then.

Settembrini

Am I correct, that they never made the final episode?

Yes.  There is no final episode.  Rumors to the contrary notwithstanding.
