It's something I've pieced together and that fits with a lot of what Greg says and a lot of what seems to come out of the best Glorantha games I've read about.

If you start thinking about what it would be like to run a game using Glorantha without feeling bound by canon and with heroquesting and mythological reshaping as things that are always 'in play' that's a start. Now, people do this in Tekumel and the Forgotten Realms too, but there you're deviating from canon/metaplot - you make the world your own and it becomes a different world.

There's a sense in which you can do this in Glorantha without it really becoming a different world after all. I mean, in one sense, it will always be Greg's, and people have to respect that. But if you think about what Greg was/is doing and do it yourself, and you realize that the elements there are in a certain sense a springboard for the group's own mythological fantasizing, there's a sense in which you can be true to Glorantha's 'core' without necessarily playing in a different world at all.

And I think the world and mythology and the idea of heroquesting all support this interpretation in a pretty deep way, which is why it's different.

This stuff is hard, I'm still not through all the thoughts, otherwise I'd just write the essay. How do real-world cultures and the lore of classic fantasy fiction get routed through a certain kind of Jungian lens in play? They do...but I hate to use all these vague words and big concepts until I understand what I'm thinking well enough to put it in relatively plain English.

It's funny. Until I read this thread, I assumed everyone homebrewed constantly, at the very least as Caesar Slaad described. "Yeah, it's Planescape, but I made up this area called the Cloud of Xeen, and you guys will be based there.."

Okay, then I guess that makes me a homebrew guy too.  My Bandit Kingdoms campaign, for instance, had almost nothing to do with Gygax's canonical description provided in Dragon.  I had my own set of orgnizations and factions and added new towns as needed.  And the great canyon in the middle of the region was a lost land full of dinosaurs and mithril veins.  The PCs never found the mithril, just a few silver strikes.

I 'homebrew' but never finish anything. Terible really. I have good ideas and I like coming up with fun stuff and I don't care what poefaced world builder types might think, nor do i care whether systems i create (which are usually 'rules lite' though i hate these definitions) are gamist or whatever bollocks the forge uses. I have loads of ideas, some get developed more than others. If nothing else it keeps the mind healthy.
