This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Dungeonpunk, and a pic I found today...

Love this. Sums up my feeling on the 3e dungeonpunk-style of garb. Not a fan.

I had to paste the url in to see it.

Personally I love the Dungeonpunk aesthetic. Who can resist pants with so many buckles?
Download Secret Santicore! (10MB). I painted the cover :)

I still maintain that the most unrealistic aspect of Hennet the Sorceror isn't his clothes, but the fact that a sorceror could be that buff.

I don't really see it as a binary phenomenon. If D&D was the only game I played, then maybe I would.

Thanks, doc! That was beautiful!

Now, I just eBayed me myself nearly all of the 2nd Edition Splatbooks.

Let me just say it can get quite repetitive. ThereĀ“s a wealth of Parkinson, Elmor, Easly and so forth artwork out there.
Culturally something as idiosyncratic as Dungeonpunk is something fresh and positive!
If there can\'t be a TPK against the will of the players it\'s not an RPG.- Pierce Inverarity

Abyssal Maw

Compared to the first edition bizarrity of Erol Otus and the superhero stylings of 1st Edition and Basic D&D artists like Tim Truman, Jeff Dee, and Bill Willingham...

2nd Edition was just boring by comparison. And even if I recognize the obvious skill of Parkinson and Elmore with their portrait style paintings and scenery backgrounds and all of that... It's obvious.  They weren't really risk-takers artistically. They could paint a guy with a moustache on a charging steed, or a chainmail bikini. But it never looked bad-ass. It looked like something you might see painted on a van.

The 2nd Edition exceptions of course, were Brom, and later DiTerlizzi, who came in late, and pretty much epitomized dungeonpunk.

Dr Rotwang!

I just like the old stuff better.  Like, some people like artichokes, and some don't.

Heck, I'd say he pretty much invented it.
I am no longer posting here or reading this forum because Pundit has regularly claimed credit for keeping this community active. I am sick of his bullshit for reasons I explain here and I don\'t want to contribute to anything he considers to be a personal success on his part.

I recommend The RPG Pub as a friendly place where RPGs can be discussed and where the guiding principles of moderation are "be kind to each other" and "no politics". It\'s pretty chill so far.

Dungeonpunk as a fashion statement I don't really mind too much.  Rather I object to the insistence on photorealistic art in D&D products.

I don't mind the realism or even the piercings, nor the unhistorical armor. What really bugs me is the lack of _scenes_. Most of the time it's just a character by itself or with a monster. No epic vistas, no decent battles.
If the new artists do something like this, it definitely can be awesome. The composition of Wayne Reynolds is better than anything Larry Elmore ever did.

But the art direction doesn't let them. Yes, I know, free-flowing text makes the layouters erect 24 hours a day, but I'd rather have another rectangular blog with something worth seeing.

You know, I think you may have hit upon a large part about what bugs me about it.
