This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Don't be a dick at a con.

Quote from: lukeErik, can you tell me a little bit about yourself?

I've been around politicians enough to know just how defenceless people can be when faced with someone who knows how to sell*, and I'm cynical enough to know that you can spin anything in to anything else. But I can't stand the game and would rather dig my alotment (or maybe I do and am just frustrated that you can't take it or leave it).

No, I don't have an alternative to the hard sell, and yes it does work, but theres no need to be mean about it.

Erik,
Thanks for answering. I don't think I exactly understand what you're saying, though. Are you saying that you can't stand that small press publishers use the hard sell for their games on various internet fora?

I certainly wouldn't call Luke a vanity publisher, he's obviously worked very hard to promote BW, as have a handful of other guys from the Forge. -- The RPG Pundit

More the fallout from Indie Publishers taking on the Military Industrial Complex of Outmoded Incoherant Games and Clearing Out the Dead Wood and Bring New Paradigms that will reduce the seven signs of aging, fight off the terrorists who threaten our freedom and are the voice of a new generationTM.

Or maybe its irritation that thats the only way to get ahead. Because, yknow, I really can't be arsed with it.

It's not.

Quote from: BalbinusIncidentally, Pundit for all his faults runs a good game in his home town and runs a board I personally enjoy, as far as I'm concerned that's making a contribution.  You may not like the guy, I'd be surprised if you did, but he is making a real contribution for all that.

Didn't you know? To count as significant enough to be worthy of consideration in Lukeland you must at least be an author of a marginally known game of dubious success.
And, I suspect, absolutely not be an author of a more-than marginally know RPG of considerable success.

Quote from: lukeAlso, watch this trick, I'll ACTUALLY ADMIT I'M WRONG. You're right, Hunter's little boards are a contribution to the hobby. I stand corrected and that means Hunter and I stand on equal ground.

Aw.
-L

That's surprising on your part. Now if we could get you to actually admit the point that was more fundamental to all of this, rather than the one no one but you raised; I wasn't ever making the argument that I'm as significant as you are; I was making the argument (as were many other people here), that the average GM who shows up at a CON to volunteer his time and effort is making an equally significant contribution to a con as you are when you go to GM, and that you don't merit special attention (and even if you did, if you were a more serious celebrity, like the designers of more mainstream games, its really bad taste to run around like primma donna demanding it).

I mean fuck, at this point everyone is probably tired of my endless Erick Wujcik fawning, but can you really imagine that guy, who's done shitloads more for this hobby than you or I ever have, showing up at a con and copping an atitude?  The extent of the guy's recognition of any "specialness" on his part is limited to a sense of responsibility that his "specialness" makes him owe this hobby more; hence things like letting people know he's visiting L.A. like he did recently, and offering to run a game or host an event if anyone wanted to. He didn't come in with special demands, didn't do it for the self-aggrandizement, he did it because he figured that some of his fans might dig getting to meet him and wanting to have fun running a game with them or whatnot.

Finally, I really don't know what you have to gain by the "hunter" moniker.  It doesn't insult me for you to call me that, nor does it make any kind of statement about me being utterly undeserving of being compared to the real HST, because I'd be the very first guy on the "admitting that" queue.

Quote from: SpikeWow... Piracy raises the hackles around here, don't it?  Definitely topica non grata, ya?

It is a topic non grata. My own personal (nonconsenting) opinions about piracy aside, my position is that offering to present copyrighted works here, even in jest, is a very serious issue that is generally beyond the limits of what's acceptable.

I'd strongly prefer that this kind of "trolling" wasn't repeated.  You want to make threads to discuss the issues and controversies of intellectual property, that's fine. But don't offer to put up anything that is copyrighted without the author's and IP owner's express consent.

Perhaps we've hit upon the crux of it. Pundit is the author of an almost completely unknown game with absolutely no success. He's jealous! It all slides into place now.

droog

It's four games Ron Edwards has published, by the way.

Ah. I did a search for Ron Edwards games and the site google sent me to showed Sorcerer and Elfs only, although Sorcerer apparently has a few sourcebooks (one of which is dedicated to characters having sex?).

See, we have a failure to communicate here.  I did not advocate piracy, merely the discussion of it's existance and relative merits and failings.

More to the point, I wasn't trolling, and I wasn't using piracy, or rather the offer of it to troll with.  That was further upstream.

By all means, keep piracy off the boards, but banning discussion of it? There we'd have to lock horns.  The skeleton in the closet doesn't go away just because you close the door and refuse to talk about it. Sometimes you gotta haul that sucker into the light and bury it.

I think he was talking to the originator of the Piracy thread, who said he had pdfs he could hand out to anyone interested.

And I would have been fine with that, but he quoted me.  I gave up on mind reading long ago, I gotta go with what I see and hear.

I have no real issue with it at this point, just that I'd rather he (or others) don't make that kind of joke again. Its not about speechcrime, its about avoiding becoming a place that gets known for being "where to go" for that sort of thing.

Note that unlike many other people who commented here, I'm not 100% anti-"piracy".  I just don't think theRPGsite is the place to promote it.
