This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Don't be a dick at a con.

What's wrong with "theft"? Doesn't completely include the fact that there's nothing missing from the original copyright holder, but at least the force aspect is gone.

Theft isn't accurate either, because the definition implies the removal of goods, and no goods are actually removed in copying it.  you can argue it being theft based on loss of revenue, but that gets hazy too.

Hence why, it's always best to be fundamentally clear in ones terminology.  Intellectual property violation IS the correct technical term.  Bootleg, for me, works as well, mainly because I'm not aware of it ever referring to anytihng but copied media being sold or otherwise distributed unlawfully.

Quote from: J ArcaneIt's become one of those terms like "LOL" that makes me want to reach through the screen and strangle the fuck out of the person using it.

I completely sympathize. Sometimes I picture the poster _actually_ laughing at the points where he uses that acronym and I just can't picture people behaving like that. Even if they're 12 and thus not technically people yet...

And don't get me started about the people using it "ironically". Idiots, don't stop at irony, go straight to cynicism.

I was referring to that. But I'd be willing to make that sacrifice to easy typing and make the speech sound less like lawyers in love. I can type pretty fast, but  somehwere there's someone with only one index finger who can't participate in these discussions and is crying over it. ;)

Please take the piracy, theft, or what ever the fuck you want to call it posting over to this thread.

Thanks.

Bootleg, as far as I know it, has it's roots in the illegal liqour industry, during the prohibition.  I even seem to recall it had somethign to do with people hiding bottles in their boots or something.

So unlicenced products that are being smuggled around would be 'bootleg', and while there is some ties with the unlicenced bit and the smuggling, technically it's still misapprorpriation of the word.

Semantics aside, the idea that language is fixed, and that one definition of a word is the only proper one is to ignore the way people speak, and the way languages evolve.

So, go Bootleg up some piracy and copy a heartbreaker into the drive over the web and give Webster the bird. Its cool, cat, you dig?
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.

oh this thread went to hell long ago. I just figured we could have less cluttered space to discuss piracy. :D

But then we'll never beat the rpg.net Motivational Posters thread by sheer length!

QuoteHe threatened to harm - in however small a fashion - someone's actual livelihood.

In order to score points in an internet flame war.

Yes, falsely. Yes, purely to provoke a response. Doesn't matter.

That's past lame, and straight into aggressively fucking stupid.

See, near as I can tell these are the guys who aggressively court a rebel freedom fighter image in order to pimp themselves at the expense of others, damaging the fun of many others in order to get noticed and feel special.

As the pundit says, the sheer selfish vileness of that cannot be underestimated. This is a hobby. Its what people do for fun, when they arn't having to do something else. And fuck you for taking that away from someone.

I'm not kidding when I talk about forge hate - I play it up obviously, but theres real anger there. They play hardball, and so must anyone who wants to get a word in edgeways.

One Horse Town

Blimey. I come back after a few hours and find that the intraweb has melted.

What's more, i've discovered that Mike Mearls & Erik Wujcik (among many other writers here) are no more than hicks in hick town. That's put things in a certain perspective...

EDIT: suggested reading http://www.therpgsite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2543

Given the provocation though, i can understand some rash words being typed by Luke. Like i said before, damned if you do, damned if you don't. A certain distance is surely a better option in situations like this?

What you played isn't "hardball" to me.

It just isn't.

You want to hate the Forge, drag their name through the mud, call them on every silly thing they're said in excruciating detail?

Do it.

You can do that, and I'll respect you in the morning.  I'll sit and laugh and be amused.

You want to call me a scumbag, an asshole, an enabler for people you think are hurting your hobby?

Do it.

But not that.

Erik, can you tell me a little bit about yourself? I'd really like to have a better perspective on where this particular view point comes from.

Where you live, how old you are, if you consider yourself well read, conservative, liberal or progressive, etc.

I certainly wouldn't call Luke a vanity publisher, he's obviously worked very hard to promote BW, as have a handful of other guys from the Forge. -- The RPG Pundit
