This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Don't be a dick at a con.

whatever, you know what we mean. :pimpdahoe:

Quote from: McrowI spelled right and used it in the right context!?!

"Software piracy" seems to be the common term, but it's about as bad as calling computer criminals "hackers". A pirate is a maritime robber. He takes stuff from other people by force. With copyright infringement, (most of the time) force isn't a factor. Comparing someone who swaps CDROM's with the latest games to murderers of the seven seas is utterly ridiculous, a ruse used by some companies and agencies to spread FUD.

After all, if there were that many software pirates, would we have global warming? I rest my case.

Quote from: SpikeThe fact that Luke is apparently an egomaniac who only came to bask in his reflected glory, rather than address a potential customer, for me, is trivial.   If he sells a product I want, I'll buy it for the right price. His personal flaws don't factor into it, and neither would percieved celebrity, real or otherwise.

Yeah well, a lot of indie designers have ego issues, I'm not exactly sure why (Luke, Ron Edwards, and a few others).

Maybe that's what it takes to publish something off-norm from the rest of the hobby.

I certianly hope not, I think Clash (Flyingmice), and Levi are both rock on  good lads for example (and despite what Clash says I think he's got some brilliant non-grognardy bits in his games), and Cynthia Celeste Miller (Cartoon Action Hour) a good lass.

Must be why H&S isn't talked about so much, I don't make a big enough ass of myself.

Quote from: J ArcaneThen what are you displeased with?  Simply that he is in fact having you on, or the mere fact that he used the piracy reference at all, serious or no?

He threatened to harm - in however small a fashion - someone's actual livelihood.

In order to score points in an internet flame war.

Yes, falsely.  Yes, purely to provoke a response.  Doesn't matter.

That's past lame, and straight into aggressively fucking stupid.

See, now I must take issue with you for you language.  Please refrain from using the acronym "FUD".  It makes you look like one of the retard fanboys you find all over vidgame forums.

Apparently, the license to do this kind of shit, is one of the main draws of this place for some folks.

Ahh, I get you now.  Note that I don't really condone his behaviour either, I just admired the craft involved.

Kind of like appreciating a well executed heist.  It's still criminal, but its execution is impressive to me.

Your reaction is part of that execution, hence my prodding.  For which I apologize, if I have personally offended you, or otherwise been a bother.

Wow... Piracy raises the hackles around here, don't it?  Definitely topica non grata, ya?

Almost makes me want to start up a thread 'bout it.

But TonyLB has already spun one off of here about something else, so I'll let sleeping dog lie...

EDIT:::: My bad, he spun it off another thread on the front page... to be clear
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.

David;

I'm not going to respond to this directly because I don't want to scream like a freak.

Which is about the mood I'm in.

Video gamers use that now? Jeepers, I'll immediately strike it out of my vocabulary. I probably got a slashdot-flashback. (Hey, I was young and needed the Asia Carrera Uses Linux articles)

Dude, I barely had the time to type 'intellectual porperty violations' just now. Just let us folks contract the above into a phrase that has existed well before the present rows over such matters.

Unless you prefer something else. I can do 'bootleg'. Bootleg's a cool word too, and still sounds all piratey.

Man, how classic is it that I then proceeded to mispell 'intellectual property violations'!

I started a thread in off-topics about it we would like to duke it there.

My other main board is Evil Avatar, a big vidgame forum, and it gets thrown around a fuck of a lot, especially in "console war" threads and news posts.

It's become one of those terms like "LOL" that makes me want to reach through the screen and strangle the fuck out of the person using it.
